Hello,
Does anyone know how to turn off the new default setting "open in new tab." I do not want the assignments opening in a new tab. After 5 years of using Canvas, I keep forgetting to unclick it, so I have to keep going back and unclicking it. Is there a way to turn off or change this default setting? Thanks!

Hi @jawall,
Just to clarify what @mzimmerman said here for both you and others who might come across this thread... There is no way for an individual user to adjust this setting on their own. In may be possible for your school/institution Canvas admin to adjust the setting for the 3rd party tool globally. You could reach out to your local team there ot ask about that possibility.
As a Canvas admin myself though, for the best compatibility across all browsers, I can tell you that opening in a new tab is generally considered the best approach right now. I know things may work in the same tab for you, but some browsers and apps have higher security settings that will cause problems with some embedded site content. Just something to think about.

Hi @jawall,
My guess would be that the vendor has noticed issues with their tool in certain browsers. Depending how the tool was originally installed, the vendor may have updated an inherited configuration, or that may have passed along instructions to your local Canvas team to reconfigure the tool.

Hi @jawall
What specific type of assignments are you creating? The only place that I have seen the "open in new tab" checked by default is when creating an External Tool assignment, which makes sense since such assignments are always coming from a system outside of Canvas, and are often blocked from opening within the Canvas frame by browser security or the policies of the remote system.
Yes. External Tool assignment. I do not want it to open in a new tab. They open fine for me in the Canvas window. Thanks!
There is no way to change the default setting.

Thank you. Since this is a NEW default setting, I thought maybe there was a way to turn it off. Maybe in a year or so, I'll remember to unclick it everytime I create this type of assignment. Sigh.
Thanks. I am curious as to why it was changed this year.
