Same assignment worth different points in two mastery paths

I currently have a mastery path set up where students can choose to either take a quiz or participate in a discussion. They take a phantom quiz that directs them into one of the two paths. However, the quizzes are challenging. If the student doesn't do well, I'd like to give them the option to participate in the discussion to make up some points. But I don't want it to be worth the same number of points as for the students who choose this initially, or students could get >100% by completing both the quiz and discussion. Is it possible to do this?

[If it was a quiz, I'd just duplicate the quiz and make the two duplicates worth different point values, and assign one to each section of the path, but I can't do that with the discussion post as this would make two different discussion boards, so students wouldn't be able to see everything.]

Nope - I was never able to make this work. I ended up just having the students either take the quiz or do the discussion post. I think I could set the system up so that students could have the option to do both using mastery paths if they did badly at the quiz. But I don't see a way to get the divergent grading to work in a way that is convenient.
