Sharing a discussion

Perhaps I am misunderstanding the Discussion purpose as a new user... As instructor, I posted a question in my course under discussions. Several students posted replies, but they can only see my initial entry, not that of the other students. Is this intentional or am I missing something. Thanks for any input.

If I go in as Instructor, there are 12 replies under the topic. I have also set up a student account and I see only 3. It doesn't appear that they are trying to start a new discussion.

At this point I am ready to just chalk this one off as another post now does seem to be working and inviolve all students.

Normally students should be able to see each other's posts in a discussion board, especially after they have made their own posts.  What specific settings do you have selected in the discussion board settings?

Thank you for the reply. I have not seen any place with specific settings for students to be able to see other student's posts. If you can give me a hint where to find that I'd be most appreciative. I've searched to various forums, YouTube, etrc. in vain.

The students see my post and a reply box but no other students' posts

You've show the settings for the overall discussion board, but what are the settings for the individual topics that you are posting?  In particular, is the "Users must post before seeing replies" option checked?

Hi,

Yes, that should not be checked if you want students to see other students replies when they first go to the discussion board.

What do you see when you look at the discussion using "Student View"?

I see what the students report seeing... only my original post.

Can you also share a screenshot of how you set up your Discussion page? I'd like to see it in the "Edit" mode. See my screenshots for what would be very helpful for us to see.

In your screenshot, the message count in the upper righthand corner shows that there are only 3 messages in that discussion.  Are there other messages that are not showing on the screen?

Also, looking back at your previous settings screenshot:

I see that you have the discussion board set to allow students to "Create discussion topics" (https://community.canvaslms.com/t5/Instructor-Guide/How-do-I-allow-students-to-create-a-course-discu...  )  Are you sure that students are replying to a topic that you have posted, rather than each creating their own discussion?

Hello @SARCInstructor 

Is your discussion setup as a group discussion? if so, are the students added to the groups within the groupset?  

With discussions, if they are setup as group discussions, the students will only see replies from the students in their groups, and any posts you make on the groups discussion. If they are not in the groups within the groupset, you will see odd behaviors like this. 

If you haven't already, it might be best to submit a case to support with your specific examples and they can take a look into this further.
