Students emailing other students

Is there a way that student's can see the other student's in the class email addresses so they can connect with each other?  I know I have access to that but am not sure if the student's can see each other's email addresses...

Hi  @stephdeav  Welcome to the Canvas Community. Good question! While students can not see each other's email addresses within Canvas, they definitely can contact other students within the course. There are instruction on this--from the student's perspective--within the online student guide here:  How do I send a message to a user in a course in the Inbox as a student?  If you are curious about the various ways students can communicate within one another within Canvas, I encourage you to look over the online student guide section regarding the Inbox, in general.

Can the ability to email other students be turned off while students are taking tests?  We have found they are cheating this way.

Canvas does not have any built-in ways to disable the Canvas Inbox (which is not the same as e-mail) or other outside applications such as Outlook to stop students from contacting each other while taking a quiz/test/exam in Canvas.  You might consider looking into the Respondus Lockdown Browser as an option...which is a third-party integration with Canvas which prevents students from going to other screens while taking a quiz/test/exam.  However, this may not stop students from using their mobile devices to message their classmates...so that's something to keep in mind as well.

you can change the student permission set to restrict the ability to have conversations with other students then they can only message Teachers and Tas.

Hello there, @mweilan ...

These permissions are set at the Canvas administrator level.  If you are not an admin for your school's Canvas environment, you will need to speak to the person(s) that is/are.  Or, try reaching out to your school's Online Learning / eLearning / Distance Education team.  Someone should be able to help you.  Here are the Guides that your school's admin would need as a reference:
