Syncing with Microsoft Teams - Students added as Members not Students

With the Microsoft Teams sync feature, all our students are added to a Teams course with the role of member rather than student.

We have other products that integrate with Microsoft Teams but as a K12 school, they expect the school to be a Microsoft tenant that's enabled for education usage through School Data Sync (SDS). In this case, students are added as students. As a result, our integration does not work as it is looking for 'student' roles.

Has anyone had this issue and know how to alter the sync so that students have the role 'student' not 'member'. If this is a Microsoft thing linked to their integration, does anyone know who to contact?

Thanks

@GideonWilliams  First, are you sure that students are not being added in MS Teams as Members with a role/title of Student?  If they are indeed added the Teams as Members and not Students, then I recommend that you verify that the integration between Canvas and MS Teams is correctly configured.  More on configuring the LTI can be found in Partner Listing: Microsoft Education .  Finally, if you use a custom role in Canvas for your students, then this may be a part of the issue.  According to the limitations of the Teams Classes LTI, if a user has a custom role in Canvas, the base role is used when adding the user to Teams.
