I am asking half of my students to work together for an hour of class time (either on a discussion board or webex) on a group activity. I will not be monitoring it as I will be working with other students outside at the same time. They will be submitting answers online as a group. How can I keep find out which students showed up and participated?

On the People tab, you can see Last Activity next to each student's name. This, I believe, is when the student last logged in. If you click the three dots to the right of that info and click on user details, you'll be brought to a user-specific page. To the right, there should be a button that says Access Report. You can scroll through and find the assignment/discussion you want to check in on and see when the student last viewed the page. I'm not sure there's a way to see exactly how long the student had a page open, and I'm not sure that's a reliable metric even if we could see that info since the student could have opened another tab and been working on something else with the assignment in question open in the background.
