Total Grade Column says 0% when grades are entered

Hi all,

Due to the new changes to Canvas (2025), I am struggling with the total column in the grade book. I entered grades for students and the total assignment column is providing the percentage (i.e., 97%). However, the total column that always provided the percentage and letter grade says 0% for all students. I compared my course site for this fall with my summer 2025 course. All of the same grading scheme buttons are pressed. I also noticed that the three dots in the total column for my fall 2025 course does not have an option for "display as points" or "display as percentages." There are only two options: "sort by" or "message students."

How do I get the total column to reflect the current grade and percentage in the course? Is there something missing? I have read articles and watched videos and nothing is helping. I have checked my settings as well.

Hello there, @StacieMerken ...

I'm not sure this is due to changes to Canvas.  Can you please double-check something for me (since I am unable to access your school's Canvas environment or any of your courses)?  In your course, go to your "Assignments" page.  Do you have your Assignment Groups weighted?  (For example: Homework - 50%, Graded Discussions - 25%, Quizzes - 25%.)  In my own sandbox course, I did have my Assignment Groups weighted (totaling 100%), but then when I changed them all to 0%, within my Gradebook the "Total" column showed 0% as well.  So, I am wondering if your Assignment Groups are not correctly set up to total 100%?  It's just a theory I had.

All of the same grading scheme buttons are pressed. I also noticed that the three dots in the total column for my fall 2025 course does not have an option for "display as points" or "display as percentages." There are only two options: "sort by" or "message students."

As far as I know, if you are using a Grading Scheme (via your course "Settings" page), then it will show the percentage in the "Total" column of your Gradebook.  Grades for individual assignments, however, can be set as point or percentages.  Within your Gradebook, click on the three dots at the top of any assignment column, and select "Enter Grades as".  Then, choose either "Points" or "Percentage".

I'm not sure if any of this will help or not, but hopefully it will.  Sing out if you have any other questions about this...thanks!

Hi Chris!

Your suggestion of checking under "Assignments" and weighted worked! I just had to unclick that option and now all the grades including the total are posted. Thank you so much for your help!
