How to create a running grades total column and a not-running grades total column in Canvas?  Blackboard had this facility to create these 2 columns that worked extremely well.

Running grades Total - averages all of the completed/graded assignments and ignores the assignments not completed.  Since this only averages the completed assignments, the grade is not a true grade at any point in the semester.

Not-running grades Total - automatically gives a zero for all assignments not completed, then averages all those zeros with the grades for assignments completed. This gives a true grade at any point in  semester.

I prefer to work with a not-running grade Total, so to achieve this in Canvas, I have had to default each column grade for each student for each class to zero.  This takes a lot of time.  Since Blackboard has the facility to have both running and not-running Total columns with simple check boxes, I don't see why Canvas can't!

That may enable you to avoid having to mark the grades as zero. But if you still prefer that approach then I would consider exporting he gradebook to Excel, enter all the zeros, then import that file back into Grades. This would save you lots of clicking!  See here for information on how to export/ import the gradebook.
