Unpublishing a Quiz in Canvas (the guides don't help)

Is it just me, or is it ridiculous to not be able to just UNPUBLISH a quiz in Canvas? Like others, I have created quizzes that are automatically published (another annoying "feature") and students are hopping on and taking quizzes before we have covered material. The only way out of this is to reset the date - which is also dumb, because the students who have taken the quiz already (with low points) will either request a redo or have taken screenshots of the quiz the first time around. At this point, the quiz feature of Canvas has become useless and I will look to yet another annoying third party to do quizzes.

Just please, let us unpublish or reset quizzes. I now have to go back and recreate an entire quiz! Waste of my time and an easy fix on Canvas' end.

Hi @dacia_hayslip ,

I understand the frustration—it can be tricky navigating these settings, especially when we’re all juggling so much. I’ve found that quizzes don’t automatically publish in Canvas, but I know it’s easy to accidentally hit "Save and Publish" instead of just "Save" when working quickly.I’ve done that myself before!  Just in case this was a new issue, I did test it out myself with both Classic and New Quizzes and was not able to replicate the issue of an automatically published quiz.

When creating a quiz, Canvas gives us the choice to "Save" or "Save and Publish," and setting an "Available From" date can also help control when students can see it. But I know that doesn’t solve the issue of needing to unpublish a quiz once students have taken it.

If being able to Unpublish or Reset a quiz after it’s been taken is important to you, I recommend submitting this as an idea to Canvas for future updates. Here’s a link to get started: How do I create a new idea in the Instructure Community?.
