What happens after a student fails the maximum attempts in a quiz?

Does it reset after a certain time? I want to set a max attempts quiz for 3 tries. But how does a student get a chance to try again later?

3 attempts is all they get unless you go to Moderate and allow more attempts for that student.

New Quizzes has some extra features regarding this, but not what you describe (giving limited attempts that reset after a time limit).
