What is the point with the button "Reassign Assignment"?

In Speedgrader, what is the point with the button "Reassign Assignment"?

A student can resubmit an assignment anyway. It does not matter if I "Reassign Assignment" after I have done the grading and submitted.

This means a student can submit again even when passed the assignment, among other strange things.

I believe the reassign button places the assignment on the student's to-do list again. It would be more useful if hitting the button also opened up an additional attempt for a student. But if the student is out of attempts on the assignment, the button won't grant them another attempt.

Do I understand this correctly:

- The "Reassign Assignment" button only affects the students to-do list, but not what the student actually can do? (Eg. resubmit)

Is there anyway to get this functionality:

- If I have graded, and not hit the button they should not be able to resubmit.

Does this affect the behavior in canvas: I grade the assignments as soon as I can, I can not wait until past Due date. (I have well over 100 students, and its a standard way of working in our uni.)

Your suggestion that hitting the button opens up an additional attempt would solve this. I could then set 1 attempt in the assignment settings and use the button to open up additional attempts when needed.

Maybe I should clarify my issue:

The problem is not to reassign the assignment, its the other way around, there is no stop on resubmit. The "Reassign Assignment" button does not have any effect on the students possibility to resubmit. A student can always resubmit, as long as the student is not out of attempts. They can resubmit even after my grading is done, regardless of me hitting the "Reassign Assignment" button or not.

Thank you for your clarification.  It sounds like you'd want to consider submitting this as a feature request to change the behavior of the "Reassign Assignment" button.  That way, your idea could be evaluated by others.  However, it's important to know that the entire idea process is going through some changes at the moment, and I'm not entirely sure when the new process for ideas will be announced.  That being said, there are some links that I'd like to draw your attention to...including a blog entry (first link):
