Where is Short Answer as Quiz option

I need to create a self-administered Canvas quiz using the Short Answer format. None of the options listed seem appropriate, but perhaps what I need is labeled differently. Can anybody help me out?

Hi there @OpheliaEryn! You should just do the Essay response option. There isn't any required word length or anything like that, it's just the one option for an open text response.

This cannot actually be the answer! Here is an example. we need students to be able to convert a decimal number to binary. 

Sample question: 

Convert the following decimal numbers to binary numbers using a calculator or by manual calculations. Be sure to type all 8 possible 0 & 1 values.

The answer is 00001110

However if I try and use numeric as the question type, it changes the answer to 1,110. I cannot use an essay question for something so simple. Requiring the manual grading of 30 questions submitted by each student is a hard stop. There must be a correct solution. Can anyone assist?

@stephenMusser Your question about converting values from decimal to binary is interesting. (I would not call it a short answer question; I think of short answers as 1-3 sentences.) Since the numeric question type is built for base 10, it's not a good fit. A fill-in-the-blank question might work well. The fact that the correct answer includes leading zeroes suggests the text treatment. Here are guides for classic quizzes & new quizzes:
