Why are enrolment ID's changing?

Hello there,
We are encountering a strange issue where our enrolment id's are changing and we have no idea why.
Has anyone experienced this?
The original ID from enrolling the student in the beginning of the term says it has been deleted - and is confirmed when I pull a list of the enrolments for a course and find the student enrolment ID has indeed changed.
Does anyone have any ideas about what it could be?
