I am working with several teachers that have created lots of unique video content that they have uploaded to YouTube. They are exploring the variety of ways to embed those videos in their Canvas courses and I was excited to show them how to use the YouTube External App to eliminate commercials. However, when we have started testing some of the videos, it seems to no longer work the way it used to. Pulling the sharing link from YouTube no longer returns results. Searching the title of a YouTube channel does pull up options to embed, but then when we view these embedded videos as a student it starts by playing 1 or more commercials. Have we missed an important update?
Hello @LynnReese ! I followed your steps, and got the same results, even with different videos. As a retired teacher, I did love that part of Canvas where the ads did not come in. When I clicked on the Sharing link in YouTube and copied the embed code and then clicked the cloud icon in my RCE, I did not get the advertisements! I used the same video -- using the YouTube link in the RCE and the embed link in the RCE.
Here's a link for more detailed directions. https://community.canvaslms.com/t5/Canvas-Basics-Guide/How-do-I-embed-media-from-an-external-source-...
Do you have Studio in your left hand menu (I did not see it in the video). If you do, you can add videos to studio via YouTube. I was going to suggest trying to add the video there first, then add to your page using the Studio menu option to see if that would strip the ads out.
We had a report of the same issue today. We typically give staff the directions to copy and embed the iframe using the cloud icon in the toolbar, I recall the YouTube LTI being wonky with the search results and I thought there was an issue several years ago with the ads coming through. I found using the iframe code embeds an ad-free video while the same video added via the external tool does play the ads. Who owns this LTI, is this a Canvas issue or a YouTube issue?
