answering emails from gmail account

I am unable to respond to emails that are coming through canvas to my Gmail account- I get an "undelivered message" response.  Can anyone help me change the settings so that I can respond to the email directly through the Gmail account, rather than taking the extra step of going to the canvas inbox?
