Hello, when I give feedback to my kids , I do it through the comments section. It is not annotated feedback, just a comment on the assignment. My question is: if I ONLY LEAVE A COMMENT, will the "view feedback" notification still pop up next to the assignment in the the grades tab? Or does it have to be annotated feedback for that to happen? I am trying to figure out how to tell my kids to look for their "feedback" (which is a comment) or how they will be notified that I commented on the submitted assignment. Thanks.

Yes. You are correct. If you leave a comment about the assignment, the feedback icon does show up in the student grade view. I just tried that out on an assignment for my dummy student . I added a comment in the comment area for the assignment in speed grader. before the comment, no feedback icon showed. After submitting the comment it showed up.
Gm professor Samantha. Today, I believe I have zoom with you for English 1A,, where do I start?
I am not sure if you posted this to your instructors post or not, but this is a world wide forum for discussing Canvas. I suggest you reach out directly to your instructor to find out about your English 1A course.
