excluding students from a graded discussion

For graded discussions, is there an easy way to give all students access EXCEPT a certain student or two? I assign short responses after many of my classes, but I don't want absent students to have access to those discussion threads. I realize I can insert the names of every individual student who did show up, but that's burdensome----it's better just to exclude the few absent students if possible. Thank you.

This is a really good question! Unfortunately, this is not possible with Discussions or any item that can be assigned in Canvas. 

I did a search through Ideas, and I found a long-standing request that you'd likely be interested in. Please consider adding a comment to and rating (adding a star) to Assign to everyone except selected students. By doing so, you'll automatically receive updates if the Product Team selects the topic as part of a larger project.
