If you want to use the gradebook, do you have to enter due dates to separate the grade book by semester?

If you want to separate the grade book by semester, you must enter due dates, and you also must have Grading Periods enabled in the course.  See https://community.canvaslms.com/t5/Instructor-Guide/How-do-I-use-grading-periods-in-a-course/ta-p/10... 

Grading periods are something that must be set up by your Canvas administrator for the whole system.
