Was this a Classic Quiz or a New Quiz?  That error message sounds strange.  Have you tried reporting this to Canvas Support to see what suggestions they might have for you?

How do I get help with Canvas as an instructor?

I would start with Canvas Support.  Please come back to this thread to provide an update once you've found a solution.
