@mention Discussions/Announcements Redesign email bounceback

Enabled the feature preview for Discussions/Announcements redesign, and when @mentioning someone it successfully notifies them via email with the discussion thread. Per Canvas email, it states "Comment by replying to this message, or join the conversation using this link:". When replying via email, I receive a bounce back stating the email was undelivered and to login to the canvas account to send the message via inbox tool. Am i misinterpreting "Comment by replying to this message" and it actually means log in and reply, and not to reply via email?
