"excused" option in grade book

in previous learning platform when a student did not attend clinical for a week i was able to enter an "exempt" grade in grade book for that week and points redistributed. Does the "excused" option perform the same function in the grade book??

I'm not sure if you have seen this particular Guide, but there is a section called "Select Excused Status" with a screenshot and a short description.

Hi! I'm just wondering if, other than making it so the student cannot submit the item, this is any different than just leaving the item blank/ungraded. I'm still trying to figure out a way to grade based on points rather than percentages (https://community.canvaslms.com/t5/Canvas-Question-Forum/Points-or-benchmark-grading-schemes/m-p/548...). I was wondering if I could just tell students assignments are optional and either mark as excused or don't enter zeros for things left undone. However, now that I think about it, this means that students who do 10 of 10 assignments and earn 99% on each would have lower scores than students who do one assignment and earn 100% on it. I just really wish Canvas could do points. I think it would incentivize students.
