Canvas Data 2 is Coming

Summary

Canvas Data 1 (CD1) has been enhanced as Canvas Data 2 (CD2) API and CLI. This improvement provides institutions access to their raw LMS data in bulk with high fidelity and low latency. It provides incremental queries (deltas) in addition to the table snapshots in a relational schema (CD2) as opposed to star schema (CD1). Furthermore, CD2 comes with a reference implementation example on how to load the data into a Postgres database.

Change Benefit

This allows institutions to keep the data up to date in their own database or data warehouse in order to conduct research and build custom reports, dashboards, and tools to meet their needs.

Additional Details

To run Canvas Data 2 CLI, users must have Python 3.8, 3.9, 3.10 and the PIP package manager installed. For more information, see the Data Access Platform Client Library.
