Our middle school is having issues with students editing the course nicknames to be mean and inappropriate words/emojis. Students are using iPads and the Canvas OS app. One of our Canvas admins found a way to edit the Theme and prevent nicknames from being changed but that is only working if using Canvas through a web browser. On a web browser this got rid of the 3 dots in the corner of the course card on the dashboard so nicknames couldn't be edited. However this did not apply to the app. In the app, the 3 dots still appear in the corner of the course card and a student can change the course nickname. The admin who made the original edit said he couldn't find any settings to control the Theme in the app.
Is is possible to prevent students from changing the course nickname in the Canvas app?
We are having the same issue and would like to get an answer to this question. Thanks
Hello @karrjenny and @HStone74,
Have you tried reaching out to Canvas support about this? I am unaware of an option to do this but it could be hidden behind a menu somewhere. Another possibility is that, because the Canvas iOS and Android apps are inherently different "under the hood" compared to the web app, the setting your Canvas admin found may not carry over to the mobile apps. If so, I recommend telling Canvas Support that this is not the "expected behavior" of the settings so they can determine whether to escalate it as a bug or as a "new feature" request. I also recommend that your Canvas admins reach out to their assigned Customer Success Managers (CSM) to discuss and to post about the new feature request on the Instructure Community after Instructure finalizes their new process for suggesting new features.
