Clarification Needed on Differentiation Tags Permissions and Visibility

Hi all,

I’ve been testing the Differentiation Tags feature. It's a cool feature and I really appreciate how granular the permissions are. However, I’m running into a few challenges and would love some clarification or best practices from others who’ve implemented this.

1. Permission Behavior at Different Levels
   I’d like to set up differentiation tags at the account or subaccount level for consistency, so instructors can view and use them in their courses. Is this currently possible? If not, are there any workarounds?
2. Course-Level Permissions and Visibility
   When I check/enable the “Add” permission at the course level, instructors can create differentiation tags, but the tag icon doesn’t appear next to the student’s name. Is this expected behavior, or am I missing a configuration step?
3. Understanding “Add” vs “Manage” Permissions
   From what I understand:
• Add allows instructors to create tags and assign users.
• Manage allows editing tag names, variants, and members, and also adding/removing users from tags.

So, if the “Add” permission is enabled for Teachers, should only the “Tag As” button appear in the People tab?

And if the “Manage”  permission is enabled for Teachers, should both “Tag As” & “Manage Tags” buttons be visible? I’ve seen inconsistent behavior and would appreciate clarification.

  4. UI Consistency Suggestion
Minor note: It would be great if the “New Tag” option under the “Tag As” button could be renamed  “+ Tag” for consistency with other UI elements.

Hi @lhaddad, 

1. Tags are currently only available at the course level but we're investigating what account level Tags will look like. 
2. The tag icon should only show once a user has been assigned to a Tag. If this isn't what your instructors are experiencing please report it to our support team. 
3. Yes what you describe is the expected behavior. With this if you're able to identify a course where it's not behaving like this please report it to our support team.

I have tested the Add permission as well. I have assigned only the permission "Manage differentiation tags - add" to the TA role (not the permissions Manage differentiation tags - delete and Manage differentiation tags - manage) and tested with a user with this role . The issues are:

• a user with the TA role can't see the tags that are attached to the student. The tag icons are not visible.
• a user with the TA role can see all untag/edit/manage/delete options in the interface, while he does not have the permission for these options. Using the Untag function gives the message: Tag removed successfully. But the tag is not removed (which is good, because the add permission does not give permission to untag).
• Using the edit/manage/delete options results in a technical error (for example: doFetchApi received a bad response: 403).

Expected behaviour: a user with only the permission "Manage differentiation tags - add":

• can see tags that are attached to the student
• does not see functionality in the interface for which the permission does not give permission.
