We turned on Enhanced Rubrics - and I'm doubting our decision.
1) The option to switch to traditional rubrics is grayed out (!)
2) Using the Enhanced Rubrics, you can't see the rubric description in the tray in the SpeedGrader when using the only two options: vertical and horizontal.
Is anyone else seeing this?
Solved! Go to Solution.
We’ve received feedback about the lack of flexibility with the viewing size in the traditional view, as well as its unavailability when criteria exceed five. We're addressing these issues, and an update will be released in September to enhance the user experience.
We noticed the same issue today; it was glitchy--worked for some, not others. In fact, in the vertical view, instructors must click in to the outcome title with scores (4,3,2,1, etc) to see their actual wording and point value. Also, the traditional view is fixed, takes up much of the screen, and can't be resized like it could in the "old" traditional view. Not sure we will keep this turned on!
The issue with the description is something that also is mentioned in this thread.
It has been passed on to next level support.
We decided to postpone the enhanced rubrics for now.
The issue with the Traditional view being greyed out, we found, is due to the number of ratings in the criteria. If any single criterion has a scale with more than 5 possible ratings, the traditional view is not accessible and the rubric must be viewed in horizontal or vertical view. We provided feedback to our CSM on this rather perplexing design choice.

"Enhanced Rubrics" ? Is that what this mess is called?
I was using the old system for years, leveraging some of the cool TamperMonkey tools to help automate all the stuff Instructure SHOULD have automated, and now ... none of that works. I'm back to death-by-a-1000-mouse-clicks hell trying to figure out this "new" system, that takes up more screen space unnecessarily, and is NOT intuitive.
I had all my rubrics in Excel, easily uploaded, now THAT whole system is trash apparently.
If there is an option to tell my admin to shut this crap off, I'd love to know what that is.
Hi @srandall3. I completely understand how frustrating it can be when a familiar workflow suddenly changes.
We’re actively working on reducing the size of the rubrics UI to avoid excessive scrolling and clicking. Making the experience more efficient and intuitive is definitely on our radar.
If you have some time, would you mind sending me an email with a few more specific concerns or examples of what’s not working well for you? My email is yasaman.afsharnive@instructure.com. It’ll really help the team as we prioritize upcoming improvements. (And yes, this is part of the "Enhanced Rubrics" project, if you're wondering what name to put on it 😅).
Appreciate your patience and your passion, looking forward to hearing more.
Have you tried the "Import Rubric" feature that comes with the Enhanced Rubrics feature? While this may not be the same format you are currently using for your rubrics in Excel, it may be a way to help reduce the number of clicks. In addition, if you are using Outcomes in your rubrics, as far as I can tell, you will likely need to add them separately since it doesn't look like there is a clear way on the import file to specify criteria as Outcomes. @YasiAfsharnive Are there plans to support Outcomes as part of the import of rubrics and provide those details on the export too?
In the meantime, since Enhanced Rubrics is a feature option, this is something you can discuss with your admin to also express your concerns and see if there is anything they can do for you to help address this issue temporarily.
@JamesSekcienski We're not making any updates to outcomes when importing rubrics, however, we're actively rethinking the 'import rubric' workflow for future updates. Thanks for the suggestion!
