I was doing some testing on the Enhanced Rubrics in our beta environment, in production we still have the original rubrics. I wanted to test if assignments with a rubric attached will still have the option: "Use this rubric for assignment grading" enabled when using Enhanced Rubrics because the option is in a different place.
I created an assignment in production with a rubric attached and that option enabled. I waited for the weekend and now that assignment is in my beta environment. When I preview the rubric in the assignment, I can see that the option is checked and it overrides the points possible of the assignment (so it works!)
But when I went to my Rubrics page in my navigation and went to the editor I see that option is not checked. While working as intended, the views are inconsistent on the Rubric page and on the assignment page. I also attached the same rubric to a new assignment created in beta and it's the same thing.
@kikpe Thanks for testing that out! What you’re seeing is expected behavior with Enhanced Rubrics. The “Use this rubric for assignment grading” option is tied to the assignment, not the rubric itself. So even if the option is enabled when viewing the rubric from the assignment page, it won’t show as checked if you’re looking at it from the Rubrics page in course navigation. The same rubric can be reused across multiple assignments, each with different settings. The course-level defaults just help prefill those options when you attach the rubric, but instructors can still change them on a case-by-case basis.
@YasiAfsharnive Thanks for your reply, I did some additional testing and found more inconsistencies that I wanted to bring it to your attention.
Test Case 1: I created a new assignment with the same rubric that has the option "use this rubric for assignment grading" enabled but it is not checked when I go to the rubric editor on the assignment level.
- The rubric does override the points possible as expected
- The teacher cannot turn off this option because it is not checked, they would have to duplicate the rubric.
Test Case 2: I duplicated the rubric on the Rubrics screen and checked the editor and can confirm the option "use this rubric for assignment grading" is not checked or enabled. I created a new assignment with the rubric copy and when I checked SpeedGrader, I do see that the assignment has its original points possible.
Test Case 3: I made changes to the rubric copy that was attached to an assignment but has not been used for grading yet and it created a new rubric "Rubric Copy (1)". I checked the option "use this rubric for assignment grading" and went into SpeedGrader and it does override the points possible.
Additional Notes
The main concern is the inconsistency of the view and points possible.
- In the gradebook and SpeedGrader, I can see that the points possible is changed to reflect the rubric's points possible but not on the assignment screen. That may be confusing to teachers because there are different point values for the same assignment in different places. Currently, when the rubric assignment grading option is enabled, it does change the points possible on the assignment screen, could that be added for Enhanced Rubrics?
- Could there be an indicator on the assignment screen to show that this assignment has a rubric that is being used for grading? The option is kind of buried, teachers may just attach it and not know to edit the rubric to see if the rubric they attached has the option checked or not.
@kikpe This is incredible helpful. Can you please confirm that I'm understanding the issues correctly?
Points 1-3 sound like clear bugs that we can start working on right away. #4 is a design change that we can definitely consider as we collect more feedback.
@YasiAfsharnive yes, adding those fixes would definitely be helpful for enhanced rubrics!
Really like #4! That would be a great addition to the user interface with an assignment. Rubrics and assignments become so intertwined with each other, it would be helpful if the assignment indicated the relationship without having to open the rubric to ensure it is used for grading for this assignment as they get copied to courses from other places (semester courses, Blueprints, Share to, Send to, etc)
@ldavenport4015 @kikpe Great! I'll have the team look into these issues. Thanks for your feedback
Thank you @kikpe for asking this question. Today I learned that checkpoints are coming to group discussions , and I commented on the announcement that I hope there is consistency between the enhanced rubric experience with discussions and assignments, including allowing for self-assessment.
