Group Sign Up

As a teacher, I would like to have a function to allow students to self organize group and come to sign up. The current group function is not working. Anyone can join group while other people are ready to join a group. E.g., Students A, B, C, D, E are ready to sign up a group together. They agreed to join "group 12." One person A joined, and before B, C, D, E joined, someone else joined their group. Now they will email me and asking to switch....

@AnyaCheng, at our institution we use How do I assign a student leader to a group?  with self sign-up course groups -- normally, automatically making the first student the leader.  This way, student A could include B, C, D, and E just in time; since those others will be notified, they can still switch if they no longer wish to work together.  This has been working well in Canvas for years.
