Higher quality as default in video player

Dear Canvas Community and Team,

We encountered the problem, that the default quality setting of the video player in Canvas is always the lowest possible setting. With this low value it is most of the time impossible to read text in videos.

While users can of course change the setting to a higher (usable) value, they need to do this for every video separately. As we have some courses with a high amount of short videos this leads to a very bad user experience and renders the built in video player more or less useless for us.

We already contacted the Canvas support and while they acknowledged that this is a bad user experience for students they also told us, that it is the intended behavior of the video player.

Thus, we are now proposing to change the default to the highest quality with the option to change to a lower value (i.e. while having a bad internet connection) instead to the other way around. I would be happy to hear your experience with the video player.

Greetings
Jens

YES!  Please make this adjustment, Canvas team.  My students do not always remember to change the quality of the video resolution, and thus they miss out on very important details from the videos.  As an instructional tool, being able to see these details is most important.  Please either allow the instructor to change the default setting behind the scenes, or unilaterally change all video quality settings to HIGH, and let us change to a lower setting if we need to.  Thank you.

Agree. We have screen capture tutorials, the default lowest quality posed bad impact on the product. And students think the videos quality are adaptive.

As part of the new Ideas & Themes process, all ideas in Idea Conversations were reviewed by the Product Team. Any Idea that was associated with an identified theme was moved to the new Idea & Themes space. Any Idea that was not part of the move is being marked as Archived. This will preserve the history of the conversations while also letting Community members know that Instructure will not explore the request at this time.
