Canvas ReBOOT: How a Texas district re-engaged, reset, and rebooted Canvas expectations

New Caney ISD has revamped its Canvas strategies for a post-Covid educational setting. Explore how the needs and requirements were assessed and what moves were made in implementing unified district expectations, ensuring equity and accessibility, and nurturing an educational environment that is both inclusive and dynamic.

New Caney ISD’s Digital Learning Department had launched a Canvas pilot, providing laptops to teachers and eventually transitioning to 1:1 Chromebooks for students between Fall 2013 and Spring 2015. Successes included consistent Canvas usage at secondary levels, staff courses, and lesson plan development. However, challenges such as teacher turnover, technology fatigue, accessibility, and copyright issues arose, especially during the COVID-19 response.

In response to post-COVID issues where some teachers resisted using Canvas, the Digital Learning team outlined a "ReBOOT" strategy with four steps to success. These steps include getting leaders on board, sharing successes among campuses, trying again with patience, consistency, and training, as well as emphasizing the follow-up and follow-through actions such as tailored professional development plans, district expectations set by principals, and continuous training for new teachers. The district plans to continue with custom PD plans, curriculum courses, live training, and Canvas courses while maintaining feedback mechanisms like crowdsourcing committees and needs assessment surveys as part of their ongoing strategy.
