Details

It is important to leverage TPACK (conceptual model) for integrating technology and pedagogy. Multimodal learning fits into the pedagogical knowledge bucket of the framework.

Our definition of multimodal learning refers to the use of multiple modes of communication and representation

It is important to incorporate the VARK Learning Styles (visual learning, auditory learning, reading & writing, kinesthetic learning) into student learning experiences.

Significance of multimodal learning in the AI age:

(1) changes the tasks we asks students to complete in order to demonstrate their learning (2) able to add a layer of creativity to the student learning experience

(3)fosters media literacy and critical thinking skills (what content is being AI generated and how do you know)

(4)move away for message of replacement and towards a message of enhancement of skills

Develop some kind of AI literacy within your course and make sure to have criteria in place to evaluate and recommend AI tools within your institution

Strategies for integrating multimodal learning include: utilize some online components to supplement or flip in person class, substitute in person class with online learning, blend asynchronous with synchronous modality in online course, diversify modes of instruction,  learning activities, and assessment.

Strategies for integrating AI - planning (create teaching plan, create/personalized learning materials/activities) & teaching (leverage SAMR to reimagine instruction)

  • Example for planning - padlet (curate a resource list for students curated by padlet)
  • Reimagine writing an essay using SAMR - consider how to use AI for each aspect of the framework to rethink how students create and produce the the essay
  • Example activities in courses - introduce yourself and a ‘thing’ (Canvas Discussions); visual representation for content (concept map in padlet or Lucid chart in canvas); interactive media making (genially or thinglink )

Conclusion

Multimodal learning has a significant impact on the ways and types of assessments we have students complete in order to demonstrate their learning.

How do we rethink what ‘cheating’ is? What are our goals and outcomes for students and how can we leverage AI to get there?

Would it be beneficial to leverage Canvas & Canvas Catalog to develop an AI LIteracy course for instructors and/or students? What would be the essentials that each group would need to know and understand?

Make sure to incorporate strategies for integrating multimodal learning into instruction and planning & and consider what this looks like in Canvas
