CAST UDL 2.2 chart is designed to help instructors plan to offer students choices as they approach a lesson, navigate the content, and demonstrate what they’ve learning (3.0 model coming soon)
Shelly Moore provides an insightful way to understand the importance of UDL by using a metaphor. Shelly Moore video .
Leverage tools such as Canva (banners) and Cidi Labs (Accordion panels) to enhance the learning experience for students.
Consider using the following ways to meaningfully incorporate UDL in your Canvas courses:
- Introduce standards and outcomes via a video
- Especially helpful for students who are out of class for various reasons
- Leverage video to introduce content presented in the module and activate prior knowledge (Canvas Studio); provide directions for assignments in multiple ways
- Create a Word List - use pop up (cursor over words) to show definition
- List out modules on homepage and link students to those modules for easy access to course content
- Consider using PANDA model for instructional learning in a course
- Use protocols as a way for students to engage with the content in a course via canvas discussions or canvas assignments
In order to scale this throughout the system, consider using the PLC model of lifelong learning - interdisciplinary PLCs. This allows the team to share expertise across disciples that are not usually shared and allows the diversity of each team to strengthen the skill set of each member.
Solutions to assist staff with moving towards this process - weekly, paid pd opportunities; canvas certified educator program; collaborative student retention policies and efforts.
Create a interactive graphic with recommendations (student conferences; survey students; have students create videos; whole child supports (guidance); gather student input
Conclusion
How could we crosswalk the CAST UDL chart with an overlay linking to what it looks like in Canvas?
Look for document linked in presentation that has a lesson plan template
Important to have an instructional model that all courses use to present / organize content and learning experiences to students
How would interdisciplinary PLCs work out in K - 12 institutions?
What if we rethought the problem of matriculation as a problem of instruction (lack of incorporating UDL into it; change our aim)
