As InstructureCon 2024 drew to a close, the closing keynote, “Exploring Passion and Perseverance with Jimmy Chin was an inspiring fireside chat with the legendary Jimmy Chin and Instructure VP of Global Academic Strategy, Ryan Lufkin. For those who couldn’t make it, here’s a recap I made with the help of Co-Pilot that highlights the main points from the chat.

The Power of Storytelling

Jimmy Chin kicked off his keynote by emphasizing the transformative power of storytelling. He shared how his journey as a climber, photographer, and filmmaker has been driven by a passion for telling stories that matter. Through his lens, he has brought attention to critical issues and inspired countless individuals to see the world from new perspectives.

Lifelong Learning and Growth

One of the key takeaways from Chin’s talk was the importance of lifelong learning. He stressed that learning doesn’t stop after formal education; it’s a continuous process that fuels personal and professional growth. Chin’s own career is a testament to this philosophy, as he constantly seeks new challenges and opportunities to expand his skills.

Embracing Failure

Chin didn’t shy away from discussing the role of failure in his journey. He highlighted that failure is not the end but a crucial part of the learning process. By embracing and learning from failures, we can grow stronger and more resilient. This message resonated deeply, especially in the context of education, where encouraging students to learn from their mistakes is vital.

Self-Care and Protecting Passions

In a world that often glorifies relentless hustle, Chin’s emphasis on self-care was refreshing. He spoke about the importance of protecting one’s passions and taking time to recharge. This, he argued, not only benefits the individual but also enhances their ability to contribute meaningfully to their communities and professions.

Looking Ahead

Chin wrapped up his keynote by sharing some exciting upcoming projects and his transition from documentary to narrative feature filmmaking. His enthusiasm for new ventures was contagious, leaving the audience eager to see what he will create next.

A Fun Farewell

The event concluded with a light-hearted announcement from Instructure CEO Steve Daley about next year’s conference location—Spokane, Washington. The organizers expressed their excitement and gratitude, humorously inducting attendees into the “Ed-cological Exploration Society.”

For those who missed it, Jimmy Chin’s keynote was a powerful reminder of the importance of passion, perseverance, and continuous learning. It was a fitting end to a conference dedicated to advancing education through technology.

Looking forward to seeing everyone next year in Spokane!
