Chat GPT, Prompts, Rubric Templates and Importing Rubrics

The new Rubric Enhancements now include a way to import your rubrics from a CSV template:

I'm afraid I don't find the csv template that intuitive (its probably just me..):

So, I had to download one of my own rubrics to see how it all worked!

Two of the good things about ChatGPTs/LLMs is to help with rubric creation and also put it into a form that can be easily copied.

I have had pretty good* success in creating the required rubric format when asking ChatGPT to do the leg work.

The prompt I used for a standard rubric where each statemnt links to a mark was:

Can you write me a ADD NUMBER OF CRITERIA rubric with a ADD points scale where the scale is ADD IN SCALE NAMES AND POINTS (optional) for ADD TOPIC. Can you please put the rubric into the following table that can be copied and pasted into Excel to suit a Canvas import.

Column 1 – Rubric Name

Please repeat this name for each number of criteria you use

Column 2 – Criteria Name

Please use each of the criteria you asked for in the prompt

Column 3 - Criteria Description

Please put the brief description you asked for in this column

Column 4 – Criteria Enable Range

Please write FALSE for each entry

For the next columns, each Criteria will have 3 columns linked to it

For Rating Name, please put the name of the rating eg Exemplary

For Rating Description, please put the description that matches the rating

For Rating Points, please put the number of points available linked to the prompt

For example here is a prompt I wrote:

And the resulting table looked like this:

There were a few word changes I would like ot have made eg thesis etc but I can make this in Excel.

Once done, it was a simple matter of copying to Excel and then saving as a csv file.

Uploading the template is straight forward:

And after a couple of errors (Canvas insists on the exact headings!) I successfully uploaded the spreadsheet as a new rubric:

And...

I have not explored, yet, how it might work for non-marking rubrics or range rubrics.

There were of course a few issues along the way with ChatGPT. My prompt worked probably 7 times out of 10. Occasionally it misses a point range. Sometimes it does not put it into a table! But that is not a great challenge to fix.

Certainly makes the slog of Rubric creation and addition an awful lot easier!

Ive only tried this on ChatGPT (free version) so would be interested to see how well it works on others eg CoPilot, Gemini etc...

Hope this helps!

I say please when asking ChatGPT for things too! 😊

I'd be curious about your opinion of Claude for this same task--if you ever compare the two I'd love to know your opinions of them.

Thanks you @GideonWilliams for sharing your expertise and learning !  This level of detail is super helpful to other instructors who are just getting started with ChatGPT.

I have never used of Chat GPT, only heard of it.  I guess I am now going to be formally inducted into the club!  🙂
