In the April 9 Canvas Deploy, there were several updates made to the Student Analysis Report, one of which was to stop processing html. According to Canvas Support, this was done to keep the entire response in tact, since processing the html caused some of the text to disappear in the .csv file. Unfortunately, this means html is now included in responses where students use the RCE (eg: Essay questions).
This makes the responses difficult for instructors to read, especially for those who are unfamiliar with html. Here is an example of what the responses to essay questions with minimal formatting might look like in the SAR:
HTML in essay responses
While instructors could view each attempt, it requires being logged and navigating through many student responses. We have some instructors and course administrators who have recently made the switch to New Quizzes and who have always relied on the SAR from Classic to more efficiently review student attempts. This update has made their grading tasks more challenging.
Can there be another solution to keeping HTML out of question responses while making sure students' answers remain in tact?
