New Quiz shows as ungraded even after grading both questions

I am trying to grade a quiz that has one multiple choice question and one essay question. The essay question is worth zero points because it is optional. When I try to grade the zero point question, it says that it updates the score (which stays the same since it's zero points), but the ungraded icon stays and the student's overall grade still does not incorporate the quiz score. Help? I tried overriding the quiz score on the Grades page but it didn't work.
