New Quizzes: Future integration of Test Student functionality

I've looked through the Guides, and see that there are two disclaimers regarding the Test Student in the context of New Quizzes:

•  This page in the Instructor Guide confirms that "Quiz Preview does not support [...] multiple attempts".
•  This page confirms that "New Quizzes assessments should be previewed in New Quizzes and not taken as the test student."

As an instructor weighting whether or not to switch from Classic Quizzes to New Quizzes for the upcoming Fall semester, the lack of connection to the View as Student/Test Student role worries me: I cannot truly see what my students will encounter when retaking assignments.

Is a more robust implementation of the Test Student role planned for a future New Quizzes update?

@dchaky - That's a good point. I am not sure of the plans, however, I tried out the Student View versus the Preview and found that when I create a quiz in New Quizzes and view/take it in Student View, it shows the "multiple attempts" experience, time limits, etc. quite nicely. I can take the New Quiz as the test student and it lets me take the next attempt and is a very good walk through of the student experience. Additionally, when I click Reset Student, it starts over.

I notice, however, that the note in the second guide does say, "New Quizzes assessments should be previewed in New Quizzes and not taken as the test student. Test Student attempts cannot be reset and will affect analysis reports." When I use the classic analytics, the Test Student grade for the New Quiz does show up in the data. However, when I switch to New Analytics, it does not. So you might want to enable New Analytics or it might just all come together when New Analytics replaces the current. Then you have the accurate student experience and it doesn't affect the Analytics.

A more robust implementation of the Test Student role is indeed planned for a future update to Canvas New Quizzes. Currently, there are limitations that prevent instructors from fully simulating the student experience using the Test Student role:

• Quiz Preview does not support multiple attempts.
• New Quizzes assessments should not be taken as the Test Student, as doing so can interfere with quiz analytics and reporting.
• Instructors cannot fully replicate the student experience, especially for retakes or accommodations, using the Test Student role.

✅ Planned Improvements

Canvas has acknowledged these limitations and is working toward better integration of the Test Student functionality in New Quizzes. While a specific release date hasn't been announced, the goal is to allow instructors to:

• Accurately simulate the student experience, including multiple attempts and accommodations.
• Use the Test Student role without affecting quiz analytics or reports.
• Preview quizzes in a way that mirrors real student interactions more closely.
