Recently I created a course export package that included New Quizzes. I don't have much experience with New Quizzes, and I was creating this export package to help someone else.
When I imported the export package into a blank course shell, the quizzes did not import into the course. Someone told me they had the same problem and had to enter the quizzes all over again into their new course from scratch.
There must be a better way to do this! I see in the Canvas Roadmap that New Quizzes will be able to be shared to the Canvas Commons, which seems to be a good solution. Is there a different solution until that time comes?
You are correct, @debbie_ellis that the New Quizzes are not yet included in course exports (including to Canvas Commons). A workaround for now is to export the New Quizzes as QTI files from the source course (singly, I'm afraid) and then import them (singly, I'm afraid) into the destination course. If New Quizzes is already enabled in the other course and the option is chosen to import those QTI files as New Quizzes, then they will be New Quizzes in the destination course.
The following Canvas Guides provide guidelines:
Currently, when exporting a new quiz, it in imported as a classic quiz. This conversion has bugs in it. AND why would I want to go backward when I export/import a course.
The export/import function should make an exact, identically-functioning course. Please correct this issue ASAP. Please notify me once corrected so that I may test the export/import function.
Lmao, so I've found the solution, that tech support obviously is unaware of. So there is an import option to "Import quizzes as new quizzes", but my box was greyed out. The tech support guy said this is probably because all quizzes are new quizzes and the option isn't needed.
The option is needed!
As I found out while I was trying to make a new quiz, it was greyed out because the new quiz engine was not enabled by default?! If you're going to deprecate the old quiz engine, why would the new quiz engine not be enabled by default? I digress.
Making a new quiz with the new quiz engine requires a manual enablement of the new quiz engine in an obscure location in Settings. Navigate to Settings > Feature Options > New Quizzes, click the red x, and enable.
Go back and try your import again. The option is no longer greyed out, and new quizzes are imported. However, if you find that there are mismatches with names and other settings, it is likely due to the fact that when you changed options in Canvas at some point, they didn't sync properly with the external quiz engine and vice versa. There are serious issues with sync, especially with regard to grade sync, be warned.
Thank you for this information. Although this may allow for new quizzes to be imported, it doesn't work well (as you have said). It also doesn't import the entire course which leads to broken links in modules and other issues.
The export function should export the entire course package as a .imscc . The import "Canvas Course Export Package" with the "All content" option should seamlessly import a mixed group of new and classic quizzes. There should be no other buttons to press. No other steps to complete. One step. Simple.
Canvas Development, please make this work!
Hi, lost access to my account when my old institution email was turned off, but after multiple emails to tech support and getting to Level 2, got my account transferred to my new institution email.
What worked for me, was starting the Canvas shell over from scratch, enabling new quizzes, then performing the import. Everything came in (almost) correctly. The issue with the names is not an import/export issue, I discovered.
This error is another sync issue between canvas and the new quiz engine which is external to canvas. Not yet sure about settings in general, but when you change quiz names, grades/re-grades, and even outcomes within canvas, they don't always sync with the new quiz engine. For example, if you update a quiz grade in the speedgrader quiz frame, it doesn't always update the grade in the grade/comment frame, nor in the gradebook. Sometimes the update happens immediately, sometimes after a few hours or not at all. I first noticed this during covid and have contacted tech support multiple times. It has gotten better but is still not completely fixed.
With regard to the names, some of my quizzes were created as test quizzes with generic names years ago. When I changed the names within canvas, everything showed up with the new name, so I didn't think about it again. When I finally got the import completed correctly, they imported with those old names rather than the new names, so this is part of those sync issues that need to be corrected.
Canvas New Quizzes are not automatically included in the standard course export package. This is a known limitation that can trip up instructors during course migration or backup.

🛠️ How to Export New Quizzes To export a New Quiz, you need to:
💡 Pro Tip: If you're planning to reuse New Quizzes in another course, you can import the QTI file manually or use the New Quizzes Migration During Course Import/Copy feature if your institution has enabled it.
This is clearly an AI response, and while it is technically a solution, it is a cumbersome solution, and not needed as I mentioned above.
