I just exported a CSV of the Student Analysis for a New Quiz with all of the question types. Essay answers and File Upload submissions were not included. I kind of expected File Uploads to be excluded, but not Essays.
Solved! Go to Solution.
@james_whalley I just discovered that manually graded question responses (such as Essay and File Upload) are not included in the Student Analysis CSV unless those questions have been graded. L1 support told me this is the intended behavior, but that's a big change from how the report is generated in Classic Quizzes. Please keep reporting it as a bug until they change it!

This (while bad news) is incredibly helpful to know!
It means that I will NOT be switching to new quizzes for anything that contains essay questions. The reason I download them as a .csv is so that I can actually grade all of them at once (like in blackboard) where you can see all the entered answers to a single question at once and thus ensure better grading equity.
You can't upload those question-based grades back to Canvas, but as a work around, for short answer tests, I set up a formula in excel to match question numbers and grades into one cell and then paste that as a comment.
That's very disappointing to learn this was intended.
I'm not sure what L1 support is, but when I download my Student Analysis CSV at my university, all of the student responses for Essay questions are in the file regardless of whether the individual's response has been graded or not.
Perhaps it is an issue with just your institution. You should ask them.
@DebraLD Are you using New Quizzes? If so, maybe this has been updated.
@RebeccaMoulder Thank you so much!
@L1 Support: Just because a feature meets the technical requirements that are drawn up for the engineer doesn't mean that the tool is working right. If all of the users are confused with the way it works, it's broken.
Thank you. That's what I have been trying to get Instructure to understand for the last 10 years.
