Growing with Canvas Updates

Thanks to Erin Keefe and Sallie Michalsky as well as the rest of the Canvas Training team for developing wonderful, free resource such as the Be The Hero - New Training Course for Canvas Admins!  for Canvas Admins and Growing with Canvas - New Training Course.  If you have not seen these resources yet, get your copy in the Canvas Commons.  Check out the helpful guides for the Commons here:  Guides: Commons.  

Once you import this resource into a shell, you will receive notifications when this course has been updated.  You can ask questions and get more information about these updates here and choose if you wish to import those updates to your course. 

TIP:  If you customized the Growing with Canvas course and you import the update, the entire course will be rewritten with that update.  It is best to pull the updated course into a new shell and copy the update to change specifically into your customized course.

August 30, 2018 - Update to Commons: 

In this version, we have made a few updates for enhanced accessibility:

1. Adjusted header tags to be in order on the page H1, H2, H3.

2. Removed tables used for the purpose of layout.

3. Ensured all items marked as decorative images were decorative and adjusted with alt tags.

November 8, 2018 - Recommendations until Next Update

The docs team has revised some of the video guides. The changes to the video guides are affecting the following embedded videos in the current version of Growing with Canvas. Details and recommendations are listed below. See the Action Needed column for steps you can take if you've already downloaded Growing with Canvas.

July 17, 2019 - Update to Commons

In this version we have made the following updates:

1.  Added the New Gradebook Video in 4.61:  523 - New Gradebook Overview on Vimeo 

2.  Included an overview of differences between the legacy and new gradebook

3.  Added resources to learn more about the New Gradebook including the New Gradebook Users Group

September 10, 2019 - Update to Commons

In this version we made the following updates:

1.  The link to 'How Are You Growing with Canvas' located on 6.1 | A Few Final Thoughts was repaired.  

Action Needed - If you are manually updating your course, replace that with this new link: How Are You Growing with Canvas? 

 

May 13, 2020 - Update to Commons

1. Page 4.6 updated for current Gradebook
2. Page 4.6.1 removed as redundant. 

Action Needed - If you are manually updating your course, make sure to update the content using information for the current Gradebook. 

July 6, 2020 - Update to Commons

1.  Page 2.5.1 New Rich Content Editor information added.  As a result, language in the unpublished notes to the admins have also been updated to help them choose which content RCE version to keep in the course.  Those pages are

2.  Page 3.5.2 was updated with a new Studio Video

Hi @janieruddy!

Thanks for keeping this resource updated. We have noticed that all of the Vimeo embeds in our version of this course are now showing as "private" and unable to be viewed.

Is there a setting we need to change, or a listing somewhere of updated embed codes that we can swap out to fix these issues? I have done a high level review and all of the videos in the course are showing this.

@DParkerCU @tyacosta Have you updated the course content in your instance?  When the course is updated in Commons, individuals must apply those changes manually in their own instances.  Here is the guide.  If you were not the individual who added the course to your instance, you can import again into a new course shell.  Hope this helps!

We have used this course for many years to help onboard our new teachers.  It's a valuable resource. I know the links to videos were updated last summer, but it would be very helpful to have the actual content of the videos updated.  Many (most?) still show a Canvas interface from 6 years ago.  Canvas has been updated a lot since then...in a good way. 😉

2.5.1 New RCE...

@douglas_rolley and this is after re-importing the most updated version of the course from Commons?  We don't have a way to update the existing course in your instance so you would need to make the updates from Commons.

@cdoty This is a fresh import from Commons. I actually don't think the old RCE is even available anymore. Look in the "Admins - READ THIS FIRST - How to Set Up This Course" in the Introduction module. Under "3) Decide What to Publish," you'll see 2.5.1 New Rich Content Editor. I think this page may be outdated entirely, because page 2.5 Rich Content Editor appears to be the current RCE, aka, the "New RCE". Either way, the video is a dead end.

I appreciate your work on this course. I know this is a ridiculous amount of working keeping something like this up-to-date!

@douglas_rolley I see it now!  When updating this page, 5.1 replaced the one you mentioned and now Rich Content Editor is the new one but since it was enforced, we removed the new from the title.  Additionally, the specific page you are referring to is unpublished.  The team who created this course also creates and maintains all of our training courses housed within the Services Training Portal.  For versioning, we typically don't delete outdated pages and rather unpublish them (since all users are enrolled as students).  The team should have removed this particular page when updating the course since an import will bring over all course materials; however, our typical update workflow for Training Services Portal courses was performed instead.  Apologies for the confusion.
