Bootstrap 4

Jump to solution

As a canvas instructor, without administrative access, would I be able to benefit by taking a class on Bootstrap 4 ( get more control over a canvas page?)? Please advise.

kritzerjb@unk.edu,

Canvas goes to lengths to make it difficult for instructors / designers to do crazy things that aren't supported, won't work on multiple browsers and devices, or are inaccessible. Unless you get your CSS or JavaScript added at an account or subaccount level, you're limited in what you can do by the Canvas HTML Editor Whitelist. The other option you have is to embed an iframe or write an LTI. You're welcome to incorporate Bootstrap to those, but you're also free to use any technology that you already know. Those pages live outside of Canvas and don't interact with Canvas and don't need to use the same technology that Canvas uses.

In other words, I don't see it being beneficial because you won't be able to use it with Canvas.

Thank you. What is an LTI?

Learning Tools Interoperability (LTI) is a standard for communicating between programs within a learning environment. They are called External Tools in Canvas. They allow you to pass information about the user or context (course, assignment, etc) to the program. If it's an assignment, the LTI can pass a grade back into Canvas. On the other hand, a simple embed doesn't pass any information about the context to the external page -- a YouTube video embed would be an example of this.

If you go to Course > Settings > Apps you can see a list of some of LTIs. But anyone with access to programming skills and a place to host them can write their own and they don't have to be added to the list of Apps to be used.

Would a course in Wordpress be helpful?

kritzerjb@unk.edu.

You have an admirable trait -- wanting to go above and beyond for your students. Unfortunately, you're running into some issues of not knowing what technology should be used to accomplish something. There are many ways to host pages and Wordpress is one of them. A course on Wordpress is probably not going to be helpful and would mostly be a waste of time. It would be like reading the entire operator's manual for your automobile when all you needed to know was how to check the pressure in the tires. The thing is, the owner's manual probably won't tell you how to check the pressure, just what the pressure should be. Similarly, a course on Wordpress isn't likely to get into the details of HTML and JavaScript and other things you may need to accomplish your task -- it will mostly focus on how to set up a blog, manage users, handle comments and spam, add plugins, etc. A part of that course would be how to use the editor to create content, but basic word processor know-how covers most of it.

WordPress is a Content Management System (CMS) while Canvas is a Learning Management System (LMS). There are a lot of similarities between the two, a primary difference being that Canvas is designed to handle assessments and grades while WordPress is not. Editing content in WordPress is similar to editing it with Canvas, although the WordPress editor is probably easier to use. However, you don't need a whole course in how to use WordPress to learn how to use the editor. Switching to a WordPress site won't give you much more than Canvas will -- except the ability to add interactivity and features that may not work well for all students and may not work at all with mobile devices.

What I would suggest is that you figure out what it is that you're trying to accomplish that requires more than what you can do with just Canvas. My experience with people is that it is usually a desire do something special or format something a special way. For instance, one of our instructors likes to use fancy colors to identify parts of her course. Every page is filled with light pinks, greens, and oranges on a white background. It turns out that violates accessibility standards for contrast and using color alone to distinguish something. That teacher hasn't had any training in accessibility, she just knows that she likes pretty colors and thinks her students do as well. There are other situations, like faculty designing content inside tables on a wide-screen computer and then when the student goes to look at it on a small-screen, it's unusable. Most people are familiar with just their view of the world.

Canvas has done a lot of research into learning and what works and what doesn't work. They make it difficult to do things that are going to make it harder for students to learn. If you're wanting to do something that Canvas doesn't allow, a good question to ask is if there is a better way to do it? A lot of what people want to do is something that they were forced to do with a previous learning management system. They've been doing it for so long that they forgot how unnatural it felt when they first started doing it and now they think it is the only way to accomplish something. I will admit that Canvas isn't perfect and sometimes it feels unnatural and limiting. But then I get back to the question of whether I'm doing things because I think it's best based on my experiences or because it's really best for the students.

I don't know exactly what it is that you're trying to accomplish, which makes it difficult to provide a complete answer about what would be useful and what wouldn't be useful. If you're just trying to get more control over the Canvas page, not add extra functionality, then the built-in way is to use the HTML editor mode in the Rich Content Editor and change the underlying HTML. If that's the case, then no, a course on WordPress is definitely not the way to go -- a web design course would be more useful.

However, none of that may be necessary and it might actually be discouraged. I did a little research and it appears from your email address that you're with the University of Nebraska at Kearney. They have some instructional designers, including some for the College of Education. You may want to contact the appropriate people at your institution to see what help they can provide. The instructional designers are a well-versed group of people that know what works for the web and mobile and how things should be laid out so that it works well for student learning. I wish our school had an instructional designer, but our faculty are expected to create their own courses -- we are subject matter experts, not instructional technology experts, so things like those I described earlier get delivered to the students.

I know of some schools where the instructional designers completely set up the course for the instructor, who then just teaches the course. I don't know what instructional design services that UNK offers, but I would check with them. It might save you a lot of time and headache, while giving you a better course for your students.

If you really do need to host external content because you have interactivity that won't work from within Canvas, the instructional designers will have worked with other people wanting to do that and know the best way to accomplish it.

If you haven't already found it, another resource you may want to look at is the Canvas Instructor's Guide. It may turn out that the thing you're wanting to do is already covered there. It's good on technical notes of how to do something; not so good on reasons why you might want do something. That's another area where an instructional designer would be able to help out.

James--thanks so much for your detailed reply. I am just like a new kid in a candy store as far as learning coding skills. I have just finished classes in HTML, CSS and JQUREY from Udemy and want to begin another one. i am not trying to "step outside my lane". Perhaps you wouldn't mind giving me feedback on my front page as to accessibility, etc. Here is the code:

kritzerjb@unk.edu,

Thanks for sharing the code so I could see what you're trying to accomplish. It looks like you're trying to put to make use of what you learned in your HTML classes.

Canvas now has a built-in accessibility checker. It only checks for about 13 things (if I remember the presentation at InstructureCon correctly), but it looks for issues with contrast, font size, images with alt tags, etc. It's a guideline -- automated checking can't catch everything.

I pasted your code into a page in my Canvas sandbox and ran the accessibility checker on it. It's the little man inside a circle icon on the Rich Content Editor toolbar.

284587_pastedImage_1.png

When I ran that, it came back with 155 issues.

Many of these were contrast related due to the color scheme you picked. For example, the orange "Assignments" on the blue background came back with this message.

284592_pastedImage_2.png

The orange is #ff6600 while the blue is #3a86ff. The built-in accessibility checker doesn't give the actual ratio, just the standard that should be met. If you go to some of the online contrast checkers like WebAIM: Color Contrast Checker  or WCAG - Contrast Checker, you get that the contrast between those two is 1.19:1.

I tried an accessibility checker online at IDI Web Accessibility Checker : Web Accessibility Checker . It came back with 13 known problems and 154 potential problems for your page.

You've also fallen prey to the "Teacher develops on their widescreen vs student looks at it on small screen" syndrome that I mentioned. Your table cells are hard-coded with a width of 1060px.

When I view it on my screen (which is 1920px wide), I see most of it, but there is still a horizontal scrollbar at the bottom right.

284596_pastedImage_12.png

That disappears if I minimize the course navigation menu, but there's no reason for it to be there since none of your content extends that far out.

You can shrink the width of the screen down to about 756px on a screen and it is still usable. I asked Firefox to show me what it would look like on an iPhone 6s and it gave me this:

284593_pastedImage_6.png

Even if I minimize the course navigation menu and look at it via a Galaxy S7, I get this:

284594_pastedImage_7.png

Then I went to the student App on the iPad and pulled it up. It came out looking a little better there, but the first two images (legal issues and LI) took up the entire screen by themselves and I had to scroll past those to get to the one with the Recording #210 and the message from Dr. K. I had to scroll about 4 times to get to the list of assignments. This is where the 1060px width really came into play. Because it was so wide and the iPad didn't have the real-estate for it, it was easy to scroll off the side and miss the text completely.

Here's a picture of what it looks like on the iPad after I've scrolled a little in the box at the bottom.

284595_pastedImage_8.png

I don't have an iPhone to pull it up in Safari and see what it looks like there.

Everything at the bottom is distinguished by color alone. The weeks are in yellow, readings (I think) are in blue, and assignments in Canvas (I think) are in orange. After I wrote all this, I notice that you color coded those words, but it wasn't obvious that's what you were doing. I don't have access to the Open First thing to tell, but many faculty use that to explain how to navigate the course to the students.

From a color blindness perspective, orange and blue are good colors to pick as they can be distinguished (as opposed to red and green). However, using color as the only way to discern information violates success criteria 1.4.1 is a level A requirement of the WCAG 2.0 accessibility standards.

1.4.1 Use of Color: Color is not used as the only visual means of conveying information, indicating an action, prompting a response, or distinguishing a visual element. (Level A)

A bigger issue I see than some lack of accessibility issues is that you're making life harder on yourself by duplicating much of the functionality that is built-into Canvas. By doing so, it also causes students to navigate your course differently than other courses and that consistency is part of what Canvas thinks helps students do better.

Canvas has a modules page where you can put all of those assignments and have Canvas automatically put in the due dates. Each chapter could be a module and then you could have text headers for readings and assignments. You can even go through and assign requirements so that students get a nice little check box when they've completed something.

Canvas modules also attach an icon next to each item so that students can tell in a way, other than by color alone, whether it's an assignment, a quiz, a discussion, or content page, etc. Canvas takes accessibility seriously, probably more than any other software I've used, and they strive to reach not just only level A conformance, but level AA conformance on the WCAG.

You should be putting in the due dates inside Canvas for each of those assignments so that they show up on student's To Do lists. Whether you like it or not, that's what many of them use -- all that many of them use to find things. That also adds them to the Syllabus page, which is essentially what you have all in one place except for the chapter readings. If you end up changing a due date in Canvas, you have to remember to go change it on your list. If you were using the built-in functionality, then it would be automatically changed for you.

For those items that aren't linked -- the readings of Murdick, you can create non-graded assignments and put a due date so they do appear on the To Do list and the syllabus. At InstructureCon last week, they announced that they would have the ability to schedule content pages like assignments. Somehow that silently got yanked from today's update to Canvas, but hopefully it's coming soon.

If this is what you're trying to accomplish, you don't need fancy things like embedded content and iframes or LTIs. You can do everything with the Rich Content Editor that's inside Canvas.

However, I would strongly encourage you to step back and use what Canvas has built in. I saw span elements that were nested three deep in the content. Anytime you've got to do that, you've probably making things harder than it needs to be. I write a lot of HTML and can't ever remember putting a span inside of a span, let alone three times. In my design work for Canvas, I almost never use colors or font sizes.

I'm not an instructional designer, but I would take the stuff at the top, the video message, the course blog and leave them there. Make the Open First, Syllabus, and Course Textbooks as buttons below those. Then either instruct the students to click on the modules page or add a link to the modules or syllabus page with the other buttons. Try to get the first screen to minimize scrolling so most of the information is there at the top. A real instructional designer would probably have better suggestions about how to set things up.

Finally, unrelated to the analysis, I noticed your Week 1 starts in January and the Complete Final Exam at the bottom still says 5/1/18. Part of the benefit of letting Canvas manage those is that it can catch those. It can also display them in different languages, so if you have students who speak Portuguese because of the schooling in Brazil, they could get the dates in their format of dd/mm/yy instead of the American version of mm/dd/yy. Canvas takes care of all that for you so that you can focus on the content.

Hi James,
I assume the HTML Whitelist you shared above is evergreen? I know that our institution does not encourage customized CSS or Javascript libraries because with each Canvas update, those files would also need to be updated to ensure all the codes still work.

I do not know what evergreen is. Canvas is the one who supplied the HTML whitelist, but I do not know where they got their list of items to support came from.

Depending on how much customization you do, the breaking changes with Canvas updates are rare, but they do happen. I was afraid of that when I first started and we still have very little in our custom global JavaScript files. I have written a lot of userscripts, which allow the end-user to enhance their experience without having to make it part of the global experience. Off the top of my head, I can only think of a handful of times in 5 or so years that it's been broken and only 2 that were major breaks.
