We’re excited to share that Ask Your Data just got even more powerful — you can now query, analyze, and surface insights from weblogs directly within the product!

Your Canvas Usage, Unlocked

If you’ve ever wanted quick, accessible insights into how your Canvas instance is being used – without digging through mountains of raw data from other data services in Canvas – this update is for you.

Ask Your Data now has access to weblogs! This means you can use the product to:

  • Track usage patterns
  • Explore engagement trends
  • Troubleshoot activity and answer key questions faster

It’s a simpler, more approachable way to unlock insights that help you understand what’s happening across your Canvas environment.

Note: this dataset includes the most recent 30 days of weblogs data (rolling window), consistent with what's currently available in CD2.

Making a Difference with Weblogs

Weblogs have been one of the most requested data sources in Ask Your Data. Until now, making sense of weblogs through other routes hasn’t always been easy – especially for users without deep technical expertise.

By bringing weblogs into Ask Your Data, we’re giving all users a simpler, faster way to answer questions about usage and engagement. It’s another step in making data accessible and actionable for everyone.

Your input helps us continue improving – so keep the questions (and feedback) coming here in Community, or directly in the product using the thumbs up/down buttons!

I suspect a FAQ will be about the lines containing /api/. Perhaps the documentation can have a few notes of text to explain what these are and give a tip to filter.

ps. @GergelyTar - it was super to meet you at the conference!!!

@GergelyTar, great to know weblogs are being made available.

Any thoughts on extending beyond the 30 days currently available so that queries can cover the entire term for which courses are being delivered?

@Jeff_F thanks for the suggestion, I'll pass this along to our documentations team and we’ll look into how it makes sense to incorporate clearer explanations. Also, great meeting you at the conference!

@KNGoh for now we are keeping this time period in sync with what CD2 offers (30 days), but I definitely see the value in offering a longer range that covers an entire term so this is something we'd like to explore in the future.

Hi @GergelyTar,

So that everyone is on better footing for understand terminology, by saying "weblogs" are you referring to the data points documented at https://developerdocs.instructure.com/services/dap/dataset/dataset-namespaces/dataset-canvaslogs or something else?

Thanks for clarifying that, @GergelyTar. When different terms/words are used without being linked to, it can lead to confusion. Thank you!
