The Instructure Community will enter a read-only state on November 22, 2025 as we prepare to migrate to our new Community platform in early December. Read our blog post for more info about this change.
Hello Instructure Community! We at Instructure are excited to provide additional information about the integration between Canvas Credentials and Talent Neuron, the new default skills taxonomy provider.
Along with skills alignment, the new integration provides robust market insights on in-demand skills, geographic locations where those skills are needed, and available job opportunities for Credentials users. These valuable additions to the Credentials experience are bolstered by an improved user experience, and we are excited to share a little bit more with you about what this integration entails via the FAQs below.
What is the TL;DR of this announcement?
TL;DR: Canvas Credentials will now use Talent Neuron as the default skills taxonomy for alignment to competencies. Historically, Credentials had a legacy integration with Lightcast as a skills taxonomy, but this will be replaced.
What is Talent Neuron?
Talent Neuron is a SaaS-based platform that focuses on labor market and skills data to give organizations the ability to make more strategic workforce decisions. For users of Canvas Credentials, Talent Neuron’s data can be used as a service to provide learners and employees with high-quality, industry-aligned skills Credentials.
Can Canvas Credentials customers still use Lightcast?
Yes! Credentials customers can continue to use Lightcast. Once the setting is updated, they can define skills by name, link a URL, and include optional fields like framework or code.

When will the transition take place?
Timeline: The transition date will be Monday, August 26th.
What can customers expect from this integration?
In addition to the below-added value, the biggest immediate gain with this partnership is an in-app user experience. Meaning the end user never has to navigate away from our solution. Native experiences reduce friction thus increasing adoption and utilization rates. Additional improvements include:
Is Talent Neuron’s skills taxonomy global?
Yes, TalentNeuron has data on 110 countries. However, we are starting with the United States, Canada, and the UK. We plan to add the remaining global markets in the very near term.
How is Instructure planning on assisting Credentials customers to transition to Talent Neuron?
Will there be a grace period to make the decision to transition to Talent Neuron?
Yes! When the option goes live on Monday, August 26th, Canvas Credentials users will have a month to make internal decisions regarding your skills taxonomy of choice. If you make no change, your default taxonomy will remain Talent Neuron and any skills previously associated will be migrated to the Talent Neuron taxonomy. If you choose to continue to leverage Lightcast skills, selecting the flexible skills taxonomy will keep all Lightcast skills intact and allow you to add additional Lightcasts skills.
