Admin Analytics and Course Readiness give Canvas admins greater visibility into Canvas course usage and the ability to take action on key insights related to course readiness. This update will give you even more focused data to work with.

Filtering Out Courses With No Enrollments

Starting with the April 23 Canvas deployment, courses with no enrollments will be filtered out by default from Admin Analytics and Course Readiness data. This means that when you view your Course Status chart in Admin Analytics, you'll see a more focused view of courses that have and have not been published.

Similarly, Intelligent Insights users will find their Course Readiness dashboard streamlined to show only courses with enrollments, providing a clearer picture of which courses require attention.

Why This Change?

This update addresses the issue of data clutter. Previously, courses with no enrollments could skew the data and make it harder to identify areas that needed attention. By filtering out these courses by default, we provide a more accurate and insightful representation of your active courses.

Need to See All Courses?

We understand that sometimes you may need to view all courses, including those with no enrollments. Don't worry, this option is still available! In the filter tray, you can select the checkbox “view courses with no enrollments,” allowing you to re-include courses with no enrollments if you choose.

Key Benefits

  • Cleaner Data: Focus on Canvas courses with enrollments.
  • More Accurate Insights: Get a clearer view of course status and readiness.
  • Improved Efficiency: Quickly identify courses that need support.
  • Flexibility: Option to view all courses, including those with no enrollments, via a filter.

What to Expect

After the April 23 deployment, you will notice the following changes:

  • Admin Analytics: The Course Status chart will display only courses with enrollments.
  • Intelligent Insights: The Course Readiness dashboard will only include courses with enrollments.
  • Filter Tray: A new filter will be available, allowing you to include courses with no enrollments in your data views.

We appreciate your feedback, and we believe these changes will significantly enhance your experience and provide you with more meaningful insights into your course data.

@carlycurran,

For clarification, by "no enrollments" does that mean any enrollment (regardless of type or role) or no student enrollments?

@dbrace, glad I caught up with you in the webinar yesterday! but for everyone else, "no enrollments" means any enrollment. So, if there is only a teacher enrolled in a course, that course will show up in Admin Analytics and Course Readiness dashboards.

Nice to meet you yesterday, @carlycurran, and thank you for (1) joining us, (2) clarifying, and (3) listening to the use case that I presented.

This is an excellent step forward for the administrators. Thank you!

If you could give the option to filter out the "Unused Courses", this may be just as meaningful.

The admin reports offer this category for reporting which may be perfect to toggle on and filter out these courses just like you now have for the zero enrollments.

Unused Course

This is a report of all courses that have none of the following items: assignments, announcements, discussions, files, modules, pages, or quizzes.

Of course, we would need a 'show all' feature so we still could find and help faculty load their content.
