I am extremely disappointed that this is not on the product plan. This functionality is vital in the K12 market. I don't think that Instructure fully understands how beneficial and VITAL this is for K12 teachers. The lack of the abiility to easily assign to specific groups of students a particular assignment or quiz creates an adoption hurdle for our teachers. A simple solution would be adding the ability to at least copy and paste a student list into the Assign field in the way you can copy and paste a list of email addresses into an email. This functionality would at least make it easier to provide legally required (IEP) differentiation.

You must pull your PTP grading categories into Canvas first. This is differnent than was the practice with the legacy PowerTeacher Gradebook. Here are the directions:How do I import assignment groups from PowerSchool?

While I still believe this feature MUST become a priority for Canvas as it is crucial in the K12 market, I have thought of a way around this flaw. By leveraging Mastery Paths, a teacher can "trick" Canvas into giving an appropriate assignment to a certain group of students. To do this the teacher would need to create a Mastery Path and somehow instruct the different tiers of students to answer the quiz questions a certain way. Then based on the student's "performance" on the quiz, they would be assigned particular assignments. It is messy, but could be a useful way to provide the level of differentiation in assigning to groups of students we are all searching/begging for.

I am an admin on our account and see the same issue of past enrollments appearing in the Android version of the parent app. We do close access to past terms, so I don't think term permissions are the issue. I have also gone into the desktop version and selected to only see current enrollments and see the same lack of carryover to the app. This does not happen in the iOS version of the app. Has anyone found any answers? I have been searching the community and have not found anything.

Thank you for this suggestion and for pointing out something I hadn't realized! I frequently encourage teachers to put new modules on top so students have to scroll and scroll and never considered how this would impact prerequisites. Assuming that can be fixed, I too would like instructors to be able to set a default for new modules to be placed on top!

Thank you, Beth. May I ask a few follow-up questions? When you cross-list the courses do the previous submissions made by students reappear? When the original teacher comes back do you have to follow the same procedures with the new shell- "C"- being cross-listed back to A or does the original teacher get automatically placed back into Course A?

I am looking for some suggestions on how to handle teacher leaves of absence. Our courses are generated through our integration with PowerSchool. This means that when a teacher of record is changed in PowerSchool (i.e. when a Long Term Sub is in for a teacher on leave), the original course shell is deactivated and a new shell is created with the LTS as the teacher. We have been handling this by creating a copy of the original teacher's course and then importing that copy into the new shell. This allows students to have consistent access to materials. There are, however, several drawbacks to this method. One is that students lose access to submitted work. It has been suggested that the teacher on leave is left as the primary teacher in PowerSchool and that the LTS be added as a co-teacher. Our IT and HR departments each have issues with this idea. Is anyone able to share how they handle teacher leaves in Canvas?

Hi Deborah, No, the problems have not been fixed yet. Newsela told me that they did not have a timeline on when the issues would be resolved. We have kept the integration in place and teachers are working around the short-comings in hopes that it pays off in the end!

Has anyone had any experience/issues with the Canvas/Newsela integration? We have recently purchased Newsela Pro. We have found the integration problematic. There are two issues which are problematic: All courses sync to Newsela which means that even unpublished and past enrollment courses are syncing. This means teachers have courses showing from the 15-16 school year in their list of classes in Newsela. There is not a way to delete them in Newsela. All courses default to 7th grade. Newsela said that I should set the grade level in Canvas, but to my knowledge there is not a way to do that. Teachers can change the grade-level in Newsela, but as soon as they log-out and then log back in through Canvas, the change is overridden. Newsela says they have engineers looking into the issues, but I wondered if anyone else has tried the integration and found any solutions.

Could it be that the teacher, instead of assigning to an entire section or course, assigned to individual students and then neglected to give the individual students a specific due date?

I am having the same problem. I added the LTI to a single course to test it out and see Google Drive in the Course Navigation, but not in the Rich Content Editor. I did authorize Drive as well. Did you figure anything out?

We are interested in developing ways to use Canvas to help with our curriculum mapping. We are looking to be able to create courses for a subject area that include Unit plans (with associated standards), resources for particular units, assessment options. The idea would be for teachers to be able to pull ready made activities, etc. into their Canvas courses. Is anyone doing this and/or have any advice or models to share?

Differentiated Quiz groups is a must! Differentiated assignments does not help a teacher who needs to give differentiated assessments to different tiers of students within a class. Typing in the names of each tier group member is cumbersome for our teachers. Some of our inclusion classes have three or four different versions of a test being given in order to meet the modification or accommodation needs of each special ed student. I am really surprised this feature does not already exist. I marked my calendar to vote for this idea June 1!
