I went into Beta to see what had changed for this. I went into the settings for the Redirect Tool app, and as far as I can tell, nothing has changed there.  I read through the information about the new option, and I'm honestly not sure where the change is that you made. Here are the release notes for whatever was changed in Beta: External URL Module Items Link External URL module items set to load in a new tab automatically display to students in a new browser tab.   Change Benefit This change minimizes the number of clicks required to view an external URL module item.   Affected User Roles Instructors When an external URL item is added to a module, and the Load in a New Tab checkbox is checked in the module item window, users who click the external URL in a module will view the URL in a new tab by default.   All Users Any module item with the external URL icon indicating the link will open in a new window automatically displays in a new tab. Previously the link opened a new window that only displayed a button to view the external content. The button had to be clicked a second time to view the external content. I have a wild idea... if it's such a problem to change the current tool so that it simply does what we've been asking for, then create another one that does. Seems like a simple solution. I'd gladly take the time to switch the links I've created over to a new tool if it eliminates the extra step.  ... View more

Here's the way I would use this feature... Let's say a student is in an assignment, and I have created an external link in their navigation on the left for them to click on to go to some common sight outside of Canvas. For example, I have a link there right now that allows them to go directly into my Webex room and get additional help from me. I don't need that link to open inside of Canvas, I just need it open a new tab in the browser when they click on the link. Every use I've come up with so far has been that way. Perhaps other would like something to open directly inside of Canvas, but for me that is just an extra step.  Now if I were creating a link in my navigation that is going to another canvas page... I don't see why it couldn't just open in another tab or at least have the option of opening another tab in exactly the same way. This way they're not losing where they're at in Canvas at the time they open the link. ... View more

So what you're saying is, we need to rally the troops and get everyone to vote for this thing... from what I can tell we only need about 300 more people to vote for it before it will get a serious look by Canvas    I did have a few others from our school vote for it, so hopefully that helps get some traction. ... You know, I used to have these kinds of conversations with the developer of my company site when back in the day. He used to tell me why it can't be a certain way from a programming standpoint, and I would have to explain that from a customer expectation standpoint it HAS to work another way. Then he would find a way to make it work the way it's should work. That's the way I see this problem... no one expects to have to click another time to get to the place that they're going.
