As an instructor, I use Announcements and Discussions to enrich participation. As such, I welcome Discussion replies by students as well as replies from my Announcements. Presently, if a student replies to a Discussion or Announcement, I have to remember to return to that Discussion or Announcement and check to see if there are any unread replies. This is a pain. Is there a way to receive a summary notification of any/all replies to Discussions and/or Announcements?

This idea came to me during a tech support Zoom call with my college, and the topic has been festering in my mind ever since. Rather than having to copy a specific course into the next term, why not create a Course 'Master' if you will, that can be used across multiple Terms or Sections? That way, instead of having to move all that data around each term, I can simply select the 'Master' I want to use, click a checkbox for each term it will be used for, and... done! Some qualifiers... Any updates to the Master course automatically get added to all current or upcoming course only Course dates can be set independent of Assignments/Quizzes/Exams for each term in a calendar view Course content could be marked as... universal per term The 'Master' serves as a background database, while the Course serves as the interface for all people in the course Here's my reasoning behind this idea... Some challenging aspects of setting up a course is ensuring that all content was successfully copied, dates are updated, and all carryover, term-specific content like Announcements, gets updated or deleted. You have to do all this housecleaning each term. But if Canvas used a 'Master' file that includes all regular pedagogical content, designed by the instructor, then the process of copying and updating is essentially eliminated. The only thing an instructor has to do is set dates. I recognize that this Idea would be a serious, fundamental change in how Canvas is built and operates, but once employed, may improve the lives of administrators, instructors, and most importantly, students. Hello all, In doing some rummaging around online, I found a few institutions that share Canvas Modules and pages regarding the use of Bootstrap to design Canvas Pages, both for standard desktop/laptop use as well as mobile platforms for phones and tablets. The Bootstrap code appears to add some useful features that help communicate information in a visually simple, yet attractive format. Question: Are there any guides or other resources that I can review to help redesign Canvas Pages to utilize Bootsrap (or even basic CSS) so that my course content is more engaging while still meeting accessibility guidelines?

Hi Kelley, thanks for the quick response... I recognize that the Canvas inbox does not contain all typical email features, but it does include the ability to attach files, so when I communicate to students that they should 'send me a Canvas email', they understand the basic meaning. All semantics aside, the Canvas Inbox feature works well. But my concern was not from the Canvas Inbox feature. It was started by first going to the 'People' link, selecting a student's name link, then clicking the 'message' icon next to their name and avatar on the popup sidebar. The normal Canvas Inbox feature does not behave in the way I'm describing. It's only from this sidebar message icon. The video I attached shows what happens. In my mind, why should there be any difference between sending a student a message from either the Canvas Inbox OR this sidebar message link? Its seems like the messaging function was developed twice and applied differently, depending on what page you are viewing.

This concerns me, and it's happened more than once... When trying to send a Canvas email to a student, I write out the message but then realize that I need to add links or other information into the body of the message. I try to select all the text, then copy it to the clipboard so I can ensure that if I have to restart the message, at least I have the text copied. However, during the text selection, where all the text becomes highlighted, my pending email just disappears. No text copied. It acts like my cursor somehow sweeps beyond the 'border' of the email text entry field which somehow cancels the whole process. Can I get some insight into what may be going on? Again, this has happened several times, forcing me to rewrite, from memory, an entire message.

At first, I liked the idea of assigning a late policy, but as it stands now, I won't be implementing this option as a result of this feedback. I group my assignments by purpose where some are intended to maintain healthy attendance and interaction, while others are intended to provide extensions to learning by use of textbook use from home as homework. My assignments designed to build and maintain healthy attendance and interaction are 'immediate' in nature, meaning that no late assignments are accepted. Conversely, homework assignments may be late due to their complexity. My goal is to create conditions where all students can thrive in the class by de-emphasizing rigid policy in favor of flexible learning and true mastery of concepts. By redesigning the Late Policy option to be sensitive to Assignment Groups would be a great way to reflect natural conditions in the classroom, allowing students to focus on the content of the assignment as it was originally designed.

I don't know where to ask this, so I'm placing it here first. Sorry if this is the wrong place... I would like to request that the front end of Canvas get an update. On the Assignments Edit page, the 'cancel' and 'save' buttons are nearly touching, far too close together! When using my mouse to click 'save' the cursor jumped suddenly over to the 'cancel' hemisphere and I lost about 15 minutes worth of editing. In my opinion, providing a little more space between these buttons would help ensure that accidental loss of work wouldn't happen. Can this interface modification be done?

Let's make this happen! This seems like such a simple thing. Maybe add a dropdown box to select which classes receive the Announcement. Therefore, instead of writing an Announcement inside the course, write it outside, then select where it goes after that!

Hello all, Very simply, is there a way to create a single Announcement and have it automatically sent to all my classes? I teach college level AutoCAD and Revit software classes, and often the announcement commentary applies to both classes identically. I'm looking for a way to write one Announcement, then select which classes receive this 'global' Announcement. One example might be to announce that I will be arriving late or leaving early on a particular day. Another might be to announce new off-site learning opportunities that apply to all of my design students. If the answer is 'no' or 'not yet' then I think I'll shift this over to a feature request. In my mind, it's basically the same functionality as modifying an Assignment to multiple people ('everyone' and an individual student), but I could be wrong. Thanks for reading! Jesse

Nicholas, Nope, your method didn't work either. I copied the 'preview' link and then pasted into the simple iframe code snippet you shared, which looks like the image below before I save the page... After saving the page, then performing a re-edit using the html editor, the result then looks like this... The width and height are somehow defaulting in, but the final result is still no visible information on the page. I must be doing something simply but horribly wrong!

Also, I should add that the following keeps being defaulted into the code string, even if I delete it and then save... width="300" height="150 Could this width/height be causing some bad behavior?

Stephanie, Yes, I tried harvesting the embed code. But for some reason, if I try to copy an iframe code snippet, then simply change the 'src=" portion of the code, I get nothing. The code still exists in the html editor, but no result is visible from the saved page. For example: I copied an iframe code snippet from Chris Long from this thread as shown below... <iframe src="https://www.classtools.net/random-name-picker/43_miCj6X" style="position:relative;top:0;left:0;width:675px;height:600px;overflow:none;border:none"></iframe> Then, when this snippet is pasted into a page using the html editor, the result (in html) looks like this... <p><iframe style="position: relative; top: 0; left: 0; width: 675px; height: 600px; overflow: none; border: none;" src="https://www.classtools.net/random-name-picker/43_miCj6X" width="300" height="150"></iframe></p> Notice how the <p> tags are now added, and the order of the snippet has changed, where the css 'style' is now following the 'iframe'. Now, the page still 'works' in that the 'src' is still good. But, when I replace the quoted source with another source, something random from YouTube, the result in html looks like this... <p><iframe style="position: relative; top: 0; left: 0; width: 675px; height: 600px; overflow: none; border: none;" src="https://youtu.be/Tm5fcLgN9r0" width="300" height="150"></iframe></p> This iframe code results in no visible content on the saved page. Any ideas of what might be happening here?

Stephanie, Thank you for the response. I've tried this method using an existing pdf uploaded to Google Drive, then embedding the link into an iframe. Trouble is, for some reason, although my Google Drive is synced with my Canvas account, the content of the pdf never actually gets embedded. At this point, I'm sort of 'back burnering' this idea in favor of auto-previewing the file content since it's a known, and non-embedding dependent, method of creating some sort of dynamic concept. As an aside: Using Google Chrome 'inspect', I was able to copy/paste the iframe section of the code into the assignment page but it's not dynamic. For this method to actually work, I'd have to create/edit/re-edit each page which makes the whole thing far too labor intensive. I'll do a feature request for dynamic auto-preview sizing...

The issue seems to be that the auto-open function starts an iframe that has a fixed min-height of 400px. I want a way to edit that min-height. Is this possible?

Thank you Teri, but that's not the workflow I'm after. What I'm trying to create are assignment pages that include basic RCE text and links, but also provide for a select number of the links to automatically open to a frame size that's much taller than what's defaulting in the image in my initial post. Basically, I'd like students to read content, then read the linked content, then basic content from top to bottom without a lot of scrolling. The content of the links could change periodically, which makes the idea of full page editing unattractive.

I have a question about embedding a pdf into a page. I understand how to add a file link, and have that link auto-preview in the page, but my question goes beyond this functionality. When I select 'auto--open', the iframe on the page is limited to a certain size. The size doesn't seem to be editable from my early exploration in html editing. Here's a screenshot of the frame size... My question is simply: Can the size of the frame be adjusted in some way to result in the embedded pdf being fully visible, rather than fixed/scrollable? In essence, I'd like to remove the scrolling from the embedded file so that my students read a topic preview in plain text, then see the entire pdf file as the 'body' of the page, rather than having to scroll through the pdf link. Any ideas?
