We absolutely require a keyboard shortcut to submit a comment in SpeedGrader. I technically submitted this idea a few years ago, to have a simple keyboard shortcut (e.g. Ctrl-Enter, similar to most email programs to send a message). At the time, developers said that I could just hit TAB (4 times at that point) while in the comment, which would move the focus on the submit button, then press enter. It WAS doable at the time. The TAB-...-TAB-Enter is no longer usable. With the addition of all these emojis (see more below), now it takes 9-10 TABs before I can get to Submit. In my workflow (which I’m certain other teachers would use too), I work only on the keyboard when in SpeedGrader so that I won't need to switch between keyboard and mouse/touchpad just to submit. Hitting TAB 10 times is not a shortcut... Ps. I'm not sure how often emojis are used for assignment comments. These are instructive feedbacks; the emojis don't give any clear indication of how students did other than different and indistinguishable levels of “good”. If each emoji were to represent a different evaluation, rubrics would be a better tool. If casual feedback were desired, the assignment could probably have been a discussion, and the casual feedback could have been a simple Like on the discussion board. Adding emoji in SpeedGrader thus complicates the UI and provides little pedagogical value. Just my ✌️🪙

I have just discovered the "Reassign" button. Can we consider adding another functions? With the "reassign" button, either allow instructor to change due & close date for that specific student, or bump the due/close date automatically to X days after current date (allow instructor to set X somewhere). Use case: Often I grade after the assignment has closed (not accepting submission). Using the reassign button, I'm not sure if the due date would be automatically changed for students; so if the assignment is closed, I have to manually edit the assignment and change the due date for that individual.

I agree with the dangerously close placement to "Submit content" as well, and an undo function will be helpful.

In gradebook, can we have an advanced search feature where I can filter the whole class based on the status/grade of multiple assignments? Then can we have the ability to message those students altogether? Use case: at the beginning of the semester, I have a mix of low- and high-stake assignments. Some students skip the low-stake assignments (let's call those assignments X and Y) and only do the high-stake one (Z). Some complete all the low-stakes but not the high-stake one. Some handed in nothing. I would like to be able to filter the whole class by the status of these assignments in combination, so I can send them the appropriate message — Students who missed X, Y, and Z: high-risk dropout, but also might be having difficulty with Canvas. I'd send them a message to help them with Canvas and offer to meet. Students who did X,Y but missed Z: they might not understand the importance of Z (high-stake!). Send a friendly reminder about the importance of Z. Students who missed X, Y but did Z: they might have chosen to do this. I can either let that continue, or send them a quick note acknowledging that what they're doing is fine, but they might want to consider future low-stake assignments as a way to strengthen their understanding. The message feature would be similar to the current "Message students who...". It's just the ability then to message all students who are in the filtered view of the gradebook. This messaging function would end up being a really convenient feature too for instructors to message a specific section of students, since that filter function already exists.

Yes! There are classes where I manually create attendance assignments (e.g. “Class Meeting 2/9”, “Class Meeting 2/11”) because the built-in attendance is not easy to look up, and with the daily attendance “assignments” I can share material discussed at that meeting and provide a way for students to make it up offline if that's available. It'd be great to have a text box to filter certain assignments with a name. In my case, it'd be helpful to type in “Meeting 2/” to find all the meetings in February. Putting things in assignment groups would be a hack but takes extra setting up that has no grade ramification.

To close out this thread, I guess the solutions are: 1. NO there isn't a way to copy discussion content to another course. 2. Workaround: use announcement as podcast, but lose the normal capability to send out actual announcements to class that are organized in one place.

Interesting idea @scottdennis! I wasn't aware that announcements also push out an RSS feed. It’d be a smart hack of existing functionality, but at the expense of usual function of announcements — to send out just-in-time communication to the class (e.g. snow day, room change, due date reminder, etc).

I don't think page has the podcast functionality — i.e. creating a RSS file that is accessible to students so that they can subscribe to it using their podcast apps. If I weren’t using that functionality, I would have just created separate assignments and posted the audio file in the assignment description instead.

I record my lectures as podcast episodes, which are posted in a discussion board that only I would post in in order to leverage the podcast feature. I also post transcript of each episode on the same discussion board. Is there a way to copy such instructor-only discussion board AND its contents into a new course? I have a feeling the answer is no, which then you (Canvas team) may consider this a feature request — create a different mechanism for podcast posting such that it can be copied into a different course.

I'd even venture to suggest a different UI for due dates in general: Assign Due Available Until Why list due dates in blocks that are organized by due dates? That's not how due dates work in a class, especially when instructors have to assign different due dates — due date assignments should be student-centric. My proposed table layout will take out the extra whitespace between blocks of due dates, making it a lot easier to find a student. e.g. Assign Due Available Until Everyone else 12/6 12/7 [Doe, Jo] [Adams, Bobbie] [Quinn, Mica] 12/8 Chan, Sam 12/9

Please flag a student’s discussion for grading again, after they have be graded initially, and then decide to EITHER make additional discussion posts OR edit their original posts. By flagging, I mean to have them show up again in the instructor’s To Do with the link “Grade [name of discussion]”. Many of my assignments are draft-based. The common workflow is Students submit a draft. I grade it with feedback for improvement. They revise and resubmit. If the assignment were a regular assignment, then resubmission will flag the student again for grading. However, I opt to make these discussions, because students have been enjoying the free form peer feedback they can receive. Some also like the opportunity to check out others’ work, and even follow others’ progress. Strangely, additional posts/edits by a student who has received grades on the discussion will not be flagged. As such, I have to ask students to manually message me after their resubmission, which adds unnecessary work to everyone. If they forgot to message me, or if I accidentally missed their messages, then their resubmission would just sit forever unattended. I also have to manually access the discussion’s SpeedGrader, which is relatively cumbersome because it takes 3 clicks and 1 additional page load to get to it (as opposed to a To Do > Grade link). That'd be excellent! For "traditional" online discussion (post 1, reply 2) and many other online discussions, it makes no sense to grade students who have only made one post. Setting a minimum will prevent alert fatigue.

This idea has been developed and deployed to Canvas From the home page/module view, instructors should be able to access SpeedGrader directly in the 3-dot menu for each assignment. Currently, to access SpeedGrader of an assignment, I have to click on the assignment to open the assignment page, and then click on the SpeedGrader link in the right column. Worse, if it were a discussion, then I have to click on the 3-dot menu on that discussion’s individual page to reveal the SpeedGrader link. Why am I not clicking on my To Do items to open SpeedGrader directly? Two use cases: A student submitted their initial discussion. I've graded it, and asked for a resubmission. They resubmit — but Canvas won‘t flag additional posts for a graded student in the To Do list. Discussion B relies on previous posts from Discussion A. It is immensely quicker and cleaner to view a specific student’s post in Discussion A via the SpeedGrader.

In "Edit Assignment", please sort the different due dates. In a self-pacing class, I’ve created many assignments that are meant to be drafts toward a bigger project, and will frequently bounce the assignment back to the students to work on. Therefore I really appreciate that in Canvas you can specifically give different due dates to individuals. However, after a while, it gets difficult to keep track of student progress, because these blocks of due dates are listed by the order they were created. Thus something like this: It would be great if the block whose due date is Dec 2 would be above the block that's due Dec 3.

Yes @blee! The pandemic has brought out the need for changing multiple due dates for individuals. I found myself spending on average of 2 minutes per due date change per assignment. Because my late policy this semester has been “Don’t worry about missed due dates, just propose a concrete and practical new due date and I’ll change it”, I’m fielding at least 2-3 due date change per student per week, and about 3-5 students per week. Do the math... That's half an hour just to change due dates! 😞

FYI folks — I've found a hack solution to this for now. In my scenario of an assignment that serves dual function of attendance (show up and get the points) and catch-up work (do this follow-up written work), I assign the assignment to everyone without due date. Then I create new due date criteria and give the absent students a specific due date (usually within one week of the class meeting). For folks who don't have a set due date, I can still give them points, and it won't turn to "missing" status ever!

Can we add a function to bulk change assignment status? I'm teaching in a HyFlex module currently. For each class meeting, I create an assignment. Students who have attended in person will be given the points; students who missed the class will be able to watch a recording of it, then submit written response within a week to contribute. Problem is for the students who attended in person and are given a complete grade without them having to submit anything. Once the due date has passed, they are flagged as "missing", even though they have technically completed the assignment (by attending). It's difficult to visually see how students are doing when everything is labeled "missing". This use case cannot be solved by Canvas simply by removing the status when a grade is given, since it's possible that a late status needs to be preserved. Therefore, we need a way to bulk change assignments for multiple students.
