I am beginning the process of setting up subaccounts for our college. I was encouraged to do this for reporting purposes for assessing program outcomes. I am trying to understand the process and have some questions and hope I can explain well enough to get some needed answers. My initial thought is to make my hierarchy as College --> 4 departments ( 1. Business, 2. IT, 3. Health, 4. Arts, humanities & Social Sciences) --> Programs under each department. The difficulty I am having in understanding is the gen eds. How would I associate them with the program reviews? For instance, MTH128 - Statistics is required for a number of programs. Would we have to set it up such that MTH128_1000 section is specifically for the Networking Program, MTH128_1001 section is specifically or the Welding program and so on? Then would MTH128_1000 be in the Networking Program subaccount and MTH128_1001 would be in the Welding program subaccount? Thanks for your input.

Our programmer asked that I respond with the following. We use account_id in many API calls, but it is always referring to your main accounts, in your case you only have one and it’s ID is “1”: If you look at Canvas All API Resources, they do distinguish between accounts and subaccounts: But there are only two endpoints in Subaccounts API, create and delete subaccounts. Also, in Courses API, we list courses by account and can filter courses by subaccount, but nothing we could find about joining course to subaccount.

Thank you, James. I am aware that I can use the csv file. However, we have 2500 sections loaded at this time for Fall and setting the csv will take some time. I will use that alternative if the SIS integration cannot do it.

Hello, We are beginning to break the Root account up into subaccounts for reporting purposes. Our vendor that is providing the programming for the SIS states that he cannot find any documentation for assigning classes to subaccounts in the API information. Our CSM stated that many schools do this. Can someone direct me to some documentation that shows how to do this? Hello, I am new to the Data Services work. We have been on Canvas for about a year and half. I am trying to gather some information for the dean's office. We create a TA role for some of our full-time faculty that is used to observe the adjuncts' classes. I am trying to come up with data that will show how often the instructors access the class in a given time. I can use the User Access Log in reports for current classes because I can run that weekly. Page Views only give 300 lines of data. But they are currently looking for data from Spring terms. Can anyone give any direction on how I could get this data for January to May? We would like to see a feature that will allow an instructor to add adjusted due dates to assignments in a bulk fashion when a student need accommodations for assignments, discussions and quizzes. At this time, if a student needs adjusted due dates on assignments, the instructor has to go into each and every assignment and use the +Add to assign new dates to the assignments. Some classes have 100+ assignments that need to be adjusted for a class. Thank you Patty DiGiacobbe

For the last several months, we have been able to leave the dates in the blueprints as they are and adjust the dates through the integration. In the past, we were able to set the blueprint associations for the newly created courses. After speaking with an API Consultant, we were made aware that we cannot do both with the integration, only one or the other. We would like to be able to set up the blueprint associations through the integration along with pushing the dates to the new term automatically with the integration.

Hello, Our college is growing very quickly. We currently have about 43000 online students. We started using a new SIS (CampusCloud) in the Fall. We are struggling a lot with reporting attendance. I have two questions related to attendance. 1. We have the Roll Call attendance tool set up in all of our blueprints. I set the settings how they need to be to properly communicate with our SIS. But it never fails that some instructors change the settings in the blueprints and/or the courses. So, it does not report correctly to CampusCloud. Is there any way to lock down an assignment so that the instructors cannot change the settings? 2. I've had instructors tell me that they use Canvas at other institutions and they do not have to do attendance. It is somehow done automatically from the submissions made by the students. At our institution, students must complete a gradable assessment to be considered attending. Does anyone know of an add-in, lti, or something that can capture this information and do attendance automatically for us? Thanks for your help. Patty DiGiacobbe

Hello, We began using a new SIS this year, CampusCloud. Our classes are created in Canvas through an API from CampusCloud. We are trying to create associations and synching. We have discovered that if the associations are created through the API, we do not have the ability to sync changes from the blueprint to the classes but must do it from the API. Since instructors are making the changes, they would not have access to run the API. To fix this, we thought maybe we could create the associations after the courses were created using the csv file. However, this causes all course content to be duplicated in the course because there is an initial sync when the file is imported. Does anyone know if there is a way to stop that initial sync from occurring when the csv file is imported? Another alternative I have come up with is when the classes are created from CampusCloud to Canvas to use a completely blank template. Then when we run the csv it would load the blueprint. I need some help understanding the dates in our classes as it relates to integrating with the API. I am not the programmer. I am the LMS admin. But I need to understand how to set up the blueprints so that the dates will be correct in the new courses. We have one blueprint per course, one for PSY101, PSC101, SOC101. But we have classes that run both 8 and 16 weeks. I have the start and end dates on the blueprint set to 8/17/20 to 12/20/20. I have the due dates on assignments ranging from 8/17/20 to 10/11/20 because the majority of our classes run 8 weeks. When the integration runs, it sets the dates all over the place on the 8 week classes. For instance, the first three weeks were set to the week 1 due date. Week 4 and 5 to the week 1 due date. Week 6 to the Week 3 date. Week 7 to Week 4 and Week 8 to Week 5. Can anyone give me any insight how to get this corrected? We are loading middle 8 week classes in a week and don't want to have the headache we have now. Thanks for your help. Patty DiGiacobbe

I am totally new to REST API. I have no idea how to start. I have an issue that I need some help with. We are using the Attendance Roll Call tool. I did my best to get the tool set up in all the Blueprints for Summer. However, I came to realize that the setting for not including the Attendance Assignment in the final grade in the Blueprint did not transfer to the courses. So, it seems I have some classes that are including the attendance assignment grade in the final grade. Can someone help me with a REST API to change that setting in all my Summer classes? Actually, it appears the dates disappear after all the content is loaded into the course.

Hello, I am trying to find the best way to set the start and end dates in our courses. We use blueprints to create our courses. I have something strange happening. I created a course integration file with the start and end dates in the file. I do an SIS import. The dates are present in all my new courses. However, the "Restrict Student" boxes are checked, which I don't want. So, I go to my Blueprint course to see if they are checked there and they are not. When I return to the course created from the blueprint, all the start and end dates are gone. I go back to the blueprint course, add the dates there to see if they will carry over to the new courses and they do not appear in the courses. I am working in the test environment. Does that have any bearing on why this might be happening? Thanks

Hello, We are new to Canvas beginning in January with a very quick implementation. I am still trying to find the best Blueprint Workflow for us. I am not happy with the process I am using right now. I would like to layout the process I am thinking about and ask for input. Fall and Spring semesters we run a 16 week semester, a First 8-week term, a middle 8-week term that starts 2 weeks after the first 8, and a Last 8-week term. Currently, I create a new blueprint for each term. I don't think this is very efficient and is going to cause a lot of confusion for our instructors. I know they won't be able to keep track of which blueprint they should be updating. Currently, our department manages all the blueprints-to-class creation through integration files. I would like to move to a dual blueprint for each course. So, we would have a blueprint for the 16-week courses and a blueprint for the 8-week courses. At the beginning of the semester, I would create the courses for the 16 and first 8-week terms. After week 1 is complete, I would dissociate the 8-week courses from the blueprint so that I can create the middle 8-week term courses. I understand this will not allow me to sync the first 8-week term any longer. But I found out the hard way that changing the dates in the blueprints to create the middle 8-week term, changed the dates in the first 8-week term. I would have to dissociate the middle 8-week term before creating the last 8-week term. And dissociate all before creating the next semester courses. This will allow the instructors the time to update the blueprint with new semester information without affecting the previous semester. We have program leads that are responsible for updating the dates in the Blueprints for the new term/semester. Any thoughts on if this sounds reasonable? Any suggestions to other options?
