I posted a question in the Question Forum asking why this feature hasn't been implemented. Here's a link to that question and a couple answers from @scottdennis (Community Team).
I appreciate the answers and knowing the reasoning behind their reluctance to incorporate this feature, and I'm wondering if it will be reconsidered if enough users ask for it.

Thanks for clarifying about the star ratings. I’ve noticed some ideas that went to development with way fewer than 100 stars. Not sure where I picked up that erroneous information, but I’m glad you cleared that up. Now, about the RCE in Inbox...
So, does this mean Canvas won’t ever consider adding the RCE to Inbox? I understand now why it wasn’t added, but will the requests for its implementation be considered, or is this just a flat “no” from Canvas?
For our institution, using Inbox like email is ideal because it keeps everything on Canvas and OUT of people’s personal email (and greatly reduces the hassle of tracking who’s using what email address at any given time).
Just wondering if this will ever be considered or if our requests are futile.

Here's how you can help make this happen
There's been an idea conversation about adding the rich content editor (RCE) to Canvas Inbox for SIX years! It doesn't have the necessary stars/votes to garner the attention of the Canvas/Instructure folks. I posted a link to the idea page the other day and secured a few more votes but we're still at 77. We need 100 votes to get attention and move the idea down the road to development and implementation. So, if you would like to see the RCE in Inbox, please go to the idea conversation and click on the stars at the top of the page (this is how you vote something up) There's no thumbs up button; you have to click the stars at the top of the page.

It's mind boggling to think that this has been an "idea" since March 31, 2015, and has never been implemented. It seems to me that this shouldn't even have to be an idea conversation; it should've just been implemented when the RCE was first introduced. But here we are, SIX YEARS LATER, begging for the RCE to be added to Inbox. ??♀️

I'm not really sure where to post this in order to get the attention it deserves... We NEED the Rich Content Editor in Conversations (Inbox)! There's already an idea conversation (started in 2015!), so please go and rate it up so that this will show up on the radar and get implemented. It makes no sense that the RCE is available everywhere else but not in the Canvas Inbox.

I agree! It totally disrupts the flow of Modules when a student has to return to the Modules page instead of progressing to the next assignment.

In order to get this idea noticed by the powers that be, it has to be "rated up" with star ratings. So, if you haven't done so already (or even if you have?), click the star rating at the top of this page! I'm pasting a screenshot below in case you have trouble finding it.

Is it true these ideas/suggestions are ranked by the amount of activity/comments? If we comment every day, will this idea move up the ranks and get noticed? It would be EXTREMELY HELPFUL to have the rich content editor in Inbox. As it is, if a teacher wants to send a message, they're using email because they can underline and draw attention with bold or italics or different color or font or size. Not so with Canvas Inbox. It's just plain text and the message gets lost in sea of black and white. It would also be extremely helpful to be able to link to pages, discussions, assignments, etc. This seems like a no-brainer. For crying out loud, we have it right here in the comment box! Maybe someone can explain why it's so difficult or so low on the priority list. The RCE is available just about everywhere in Canvas except Inbox. Why?

The enhanced RCE would benefit our instructors greatly when communicating with their students. Please add this feature. We want our instructors to use Inbox as opposed to personal or institution email accounts. We want the record to be kept on Canvas, not in someone's email that may or may not be accessible down the road. Thanks!
