Envisioning Parent Access

Hi Canvas Community -

 

We're transitioning to Canvas as our LMS and are curious about the parent perspective. Here's what parent access looks like in our current system:

 

  • parents do NOT have access to daily assignment information
  • parents do NOT have access to daily grade information
  • parents gain access to grades published at midterm and end of term
  • parents also gain access to granular view of gradebook (individual assignment grades) for a one-week window surrounding the midterm and end of term grade release

 

We understand that transparency and clarity are integral to Canvas' philosophy and mission --- but we're also wondering how to manage this shift incrementally or meet our institution's needs and Canvas' structure somewhere in the middle. While we value the dynamic Canvas environment, having students at the center of their learning experience, developing critical self-advocacy skills and taking real ownership of their learning are core values at Bay. We are curious to know how other schools balance similar needs and concerns. Any insight into how we might creatively envision the parent role and access --- and how your school envisions it --- would be SO appreciated!
